Book

Post by Boomerang »

Well i went on ebay recently and found a book on space camp. I thought i was buying the book Space Camp the great adventure for NASA Hopefuls Which id read before but never owned it was published in 1992 so it is alot like the space camp i knew. Instead i got a huge suprise the book i got was Your Future in Space the US Space Camp training program published not in 1992 but in 1986. This book is full of pictures of the old training center when it was over on the site where the habs are now. It still refers to Space Camp and Space Camp level 2 (Now space academy) Space academy level 2 didnt yet exuist. Most of the pictures come from a camp level 2 or as we know it now academy group. See alot of olsd pictures of the discovery simulator. Much more realistic EMU suits fior EVA's in many cases. And even see campers wearing the old pre challenger launch and entry helmets for parts of the missions. There is ome picture that appears to most likely be Atlantis's cockpit since its too complete for Discovery. Man i almost didnt buy this book but its a treasure trove for a space camp none of us new and glimpsed in the movie unrealisticly. Cant wait to actually read this thing.

Well i actually finished most of the book altready. My wearlier statement about camp level 1 and 2 being equivelant to camp and academy isnt exactly acruate to quote the book "Space camp currently has 3 programs, Level 1 for grades 5, 6, and 7. Level 2 for grades 8, 9, and 10. And a familiarizationj program for adults. A program for advanced students is being planned" So the old programs dont quite correspondf exactly to current ones but are fairly close. Also taking a closer look at the cockpit picture that i believed was atlantis i was wronmg it was discovery. Also has pictures of an early space station kock up for the campers to experiance what a space staion may be like in the future though its not partof the missions at that time. Has a few pictures of the old columbia simulator in there as well.

The book format talks about the space shuttle and astronauts and shows the paralel between space camp training and astronaut training its actually pretty intresting. It is obvuiously dated with alot of pre challengernideas though it wasnt published till after the accident. It still talks about a space station being operational by the early 90s, Hubbnle being launched by 87 and comercial sattelite deployments that were common prior to challenger. Its a great book if you can find it used.

I actually have a set of wings from that era. "Space Camp I" is imprinted on them.
