Thats an intresting thought alien kids learning to fly flying saucers at an alien space camp on another planet.

Well i think the odds are pretty good that life exist elsewhere although it might not be multicellular or life as we know it but who know.

Hi there everyone. Just got referred to this site today by Tony at camp. Cool site.
Now about the planet Mars. Man where do you begin? I don't think any other planet other than our own has intrigued us more than our little red neighbor, Mars. As early as the 1600's people already had ideas about the planet. Some a bit more logical than others but wonderous indeed. No other alien planet in our solar system has been more talked about, studied, been the base for many books and movies, or discussed more than Mars.
I am a huge space geek, that I will willingly admit. Sometimes I will dream about it. Sometimes asleep sometimes awake. What it would be like to walk in it's surface, feel its breeze, see a sunset, look up and see two moons, yet be alone. Sometimes I see mars more vividly than I see our own planet. When we put Pathfinder there in 97 and you could see the tracks left in the soil by Sojourner it makes you think. Basically right now if money wasn't an option, only two things come to mind that you would have to develop. Since current technology means getting to Mars will take about eight months some issues must be taken into account. First the lack of gravity will do bad things to the body. You guys know that from your Gemni briefing. Centrifugal force can overcome this obstical with time and more research. Being in space for a long time away from the van-allen radiation belt means that you will be exposed to dangerous radiation levels. Again this can be overcome with research and more time.
If we get to Mars it will not be a single country's sucess. It must involve united research of many. Someone alive right now more than likely posseses the answer that could unlock the technocal problems of spacefaring. They just don't know it yet.
Do you realize on Mars at a certain time of year that you could walk it's surface with nothing more than an oxygen mask. the temp reaches 70 deg.F and about the pressure, EVA suits run about 4.5-5psi. You just need a rich O2 environment. Just imagine kneeling down and taking a scoop of soil with your bare hand.
Sends chills up my spine everytime I think about it.

You dropped your pocket, your socks are untied, and those are the same clothes you were wearing the day after yesterday.

Well welcome to the sight glad someone new is posting. And second your so right i would love to go to mars. But for the mean time it looks like we will have to settle for unmanned probes. I attended a lecture by an engineer from NASA Langley Research Center earlier this year on NASA's future mars projects and some of the new rovers will make sojourner look like a childs toy. Some of the new rovers will be completely self operated and wont need commands from the ground for movement. Some will be considerably larger than sojourner and eventually the unmanned missions wil clminate with the fitrst sample return probe.

Hopefully 2 rovers will be launched in 03. There is a contest going on now to name the twin rovers. And yes they are quite large. JPL is using the airbag technology that was used for Sojourner as it seems to be quite reliable and inexpensive when compared to a engine desending system. One neat thing about the rovers is that they will carry a calibration target mounted to one of the array petals. this target will be used once a day for camera calibration. It also acts as a sundial. However, since the rover is not stationary, numbers on the dial would be ineffective. They are working on a program that will take in account the rovers position and generate a digital overlay. I just saw an image of one of the rovers next to a model of Sojourner. It is cool to see the progression.
It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Well as exciting as pathfinder and sojourner were to watch several years ago these new rovers sound like they will be even more exciting. I cant wait to see what they will do and the information they will send back to earth.

FIRST MARS EXPLORATION ROVER ARRIVES AT KSC TO BEGIN PREPARATION FOR LAUNCH
The first of two Mars Exploration Rovers, MER-2 arrived at the Kennedy Space
Center today from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. The
cruise stage, aeroshell and lander for the Mars Exploration Rover-1 mission
also arrived today. This same flight hardware for the MER-2 rover arrived
January 27, however this rover is scheduled to arrive at KSC around March
10.
The Boeing Delta II vehicle for the first launch of the two launches
scheduled on May 25 is planned for erection on the pad at Space Launch
Complex 17 beginning April 18. The Delta for the second launch on June 30
will begin erection activities on May 1. Each spacecraft will receive a
MER-A or MER-B designation once they arrive at the pad.
While at KSC, each of the two rovers, the aeroshells and the landers will
undergo a full mission simulation. All of these flight elements will then
be integrated together. After spin balance testing, each spacecraft will be
mated to a solid propellant upper stage booster that will propel the
spacecraft out of Earth orbit. Approximately ten days before launch they
will be transported to the launch pad for mating with their respective
Boeing Delta II rockets.
The rovers will serve as robotic geologists to seek answers about the
evolution of Mars, particularly for a history of water.
