They didn't want to fly in the 'vomit comit'?
From a NASA press release: This spring, NASA Explorer Schools teams of teachers and administrators from Nebraska, Minnesota, and Iowa will fly aboard NASA's "weightless wonder", a KC-135A aircraft, as part of NASA's Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program.
Weightless wonder? I guess the idea of riding in an aircraft called the 'vomit comit' didn't thrill them...

The KC-135 (at least the one NASA uses) has ALWAYS been officially called the "Weightless Wonder." The term "Vomit Comet" came as many military aircraft names do, as an insult that later became a term of affection by their crews. Military aviation is full of such offical/unoffical knicknames:
A-10 Official- Thunderbolt II Unofficial- Warthog
B-52 Official- Stratofortress Unofficial- BUFF (Big, Ugly, Fat, ________)
F-16 Official- Fighting Falcon Unofficial- Viper
F-105 Official- Thundercheif Unofficial- Thud
F-14 Official- Tomcat Unofficial- Flying Tennis Court
Just to name a few. And here's a hard one... list the official designation and name for the worlds fastest airplane and it's unofficial names.

Well as for the above challenge as to the fastest planes official and unoficial name i know the official one is the SR-71 blackbird but i dont remember any unofficial names. The people around here also have a few nicknames for F-15's and F-18 super hornets. But if i repeated them here Vincent would at the very least erase them and at worst kick me off the board. We have alot of people around here who dont seem to understand living next to an Air Force Base or Naval Air Station involves a fair ammount of noise. But yet they keep moving there. I'm affraid to see what people will be calling the F-22 next year when Langley gets its first squadron. They are supose to be even louderthan the F-15.

Ok, ok... I'm actually watching the game. It's still the Worst Superbowl Ever! (Go Carolina!)
The SR-71 was originally the RS-71, but thanks to Pres. Johnson not being able to read correctly at the public unveiling of it, it was changed to the SR-71.
The 71 has no official knickname. It has been called the Blackbird just about forever. It has also been called the Habu, after a poisionous black viper found on the island of Okinawa. (The locals thought it looked like it. I used to live there!!!!) It was also called (as an insult by U-2/TR-1 pilots) the Sled. The 71 community as a whole used this knickname more than an other, followed by Habu, and Blackbird lastely. Blackbird was mostly a press thing.
...back to the commercials... I mean game.

omg, not only does the game suck, but so do the commercials! grrr! i think the two cutest ones so far are the pepsi with the bear towards the beginning of the game and the donkey that wanted to be a budweiser clydesdale...or maybe that one where every 5 kids try cigarettes before the age of 13 or the shards o' glass popsicles...HAHA!!! jk, jk!
GO CAROLINA!!!

What you said about the astronaut families helping eachotgher is probab;y true. I know before each flight the crew members will pick another astronaut ussualy someone who the family knows well and are friends with to serve as a dependent assist officer. they help the family deal with press, or other problems that may arise as well as keeping them informed about the mission. In the even of an accident like Columbhia they take on a new role as the cassualty assist officer and again help the families deal with the press as well as funeral arrangements and anything else the family needs after a tragedy.

Try again campers...
The A-12 (Codename "OXCART") never had an offical knickname either. The practice of giving "black" aircraft official knicknames is a relatively new process. When the B-2 was unveiled back in '88 (?) it didn't have one yet. It was later named the "Spirit." Same with the F-117, which was built under Codename "Have Blue," later named "Nighthawk."
