Beer on Mars

Post by ethlar04 »

First off, I dont know how many people know this but there is beer on Mars. I you go in the museum over to the rock climbing wall, as you walk by that towards the IMAX and gift shops, there is a section of a map of Mars. If you look just above the protective plexiglass cover of the bottom 7-8 feet, there is a region called Beer, plainly marked. I simply find that amusing, we have beer on Mars and have to wonder what is on those scientists minds. I have a picture of this for anyone who is interested, I will post it later when I get my scanner working.
Also, as most of you know Mars and Earth's orbits are synced in a maner that around the end or August, Mars will be closer than it has ever been since the dawn of man (a calculated fact or course). But, the cool thing is that it is supposed to be close enough that you could go out with good binoculars and see the polar ice caps.

They gave us a piece of paper during the solar system lecture that explained about looking at Mars....good thing you reminded me because of course I lost it.

Ok, I was wrong. I was there week 40 this year. Which would explain why I know nothing about patches.

Well I was week 43 and I bought a team patch. It is pretty cool. It reminds me of my dysfunctional Tsiolkovsky team. What time is it? T-Time!

Just a reminder that this whole event with Mars being really close to earth is going to reach its climax some time around August 27. Just a reminder 8)

I'm going out to my grandma's cabin this weekend and I'm bringing my telescope with me. I can get really dark skies out there because its so far away from any major city.

Sweet! I live right by an airport, which makes things toughwhen looking for satellites. Plus, it's in FL, so it's often cloudy. Plus, I live right outside Tampa, so there's a lot of light pollution. It sucks.

It shouldn't be too cloudy this weekend. But there is not much light there because there are no cities around, just some small towns. It should be great for viewing.

I just got my telescope back in, which is a pain in the [butt] but, i live just outside of Baltimore and Washington DC so light and air polution are issues but, I managed to get a good look at Mars with my telescope and actually could make out the ice caps (I thought that was really cool :D :D )

A few notes to anyone else who tries to look at it and hasn't yet:
1. When you use the really high power lenses it moves abnormally fast (I know things move quickly when magnified but this was faster than anything i had ever looked at before)
2. Its doesnt look as red as most of those pictures in magazines make it look.
3. Dont be surprised when it doesn't resolve as big as you though it would.

That being said, happy stargazing and good luck!

MOSI (the Museum of Science and Industry) is having several MarsWatch events. I would have liked to go the one they have at a wilderness preserve, but it's sold out. The other one is on top of the IMAX dome. I think I'm going to that one. It's not too close to the city, so it should be okay.

When I went out I got a real good view of it. There was not a cloud in the sky. I was outside in a field at 11:30pm. I even saw a satelite go over. They sky was really clear and there were hundreds of stars you could see with the naked eye.

My aunt was in NY during the blackout and she saw Mars as well as a few sats, too. She was upstate, so there wouldn't normally be many lights, anyway, but it was pitch black, she said.

I hate living right outside Indianapolis, not to mention right next to the airport. My telescope isn't that great either, so I haven't had much luck yet.
