Cross your Fingers for Manned Spaceflight Continuing

Post by Vincent »

When Hurricane Frances makes it to the East coast, should it strike more South than North, KSC could be directly in the path of its 140mph+ winds.

This could very well spell an end to the Space Shuttle program if KSC takes enough damage in a variety of ways.

Keep your fingers crossed that manned spaceflight doesn't have to wait any longer until 2005.

More can be read here.

I am safe, FIT closed classes starting Wednesday at five pm. I tried to see if people would let stay in their house in FL to the west but most could not but would drive at least to where they where going and I could try to find a hotel. Unknown to me my parents where making arrangements from them to pick me up starting about three in the morning after they fond out that it could be a cat 4 or cat 5 when she hit FIT in Melbourne, Fl. Plus the early predictions where saying that the eye would directly hit Melbourne. They picked me up about one clock so they had been driving for about 12 hrs straight. After they had picked me up they drove for about another 12 straight hours with about a three-hour sleep break in the middle. We tried to get a hotel in Georgia but almost all hotels where booked solid. Before I left I packed all my stuff in the closet that I have in my dorm room and duck taped it shut about every hole was covered because I have me CPU and monitor in there. I don't have to worry about flooding because I am on the fifth floor.

I live on the Sun Coast... we'll get some nasty weather, but nothing I'm not used to. The big worry in hurricanes in the storm surge. The water often rises over 15 feet above normal (don't forget about the tides!) as the hurricane pushes all of the water ahead of itself. Since I'm on the Gulf, I don't have to worry about that. If Chuck had hit me, I would have been in trouble. That's why I bought that raft.

Well, Frances has been lowered to a Category 2, so any damage on The Cape shouldn't be too, too bad...whew!

Luckily all it seemed to do to KSC was knock out a Redstone rocket. It looks pretty sad but i think maybe if they bang the dents out of it and make a few new parts it should be ok. I'm just glad it wasnt worse. YAY :D
