'Island Horror Stories'

Post by SpaceCanada »

So this is the said post about the horror film I 'starred' in this past month. The title is 'Island Horror Stories'. It was written, directed, filmed, and edited by my brother as a school project for his digital media and design course at a technical college.

The script was rather weak, as my brother has never been in drama classes before. Thankfully many of the 'actors' (my cousin, her beau, myself, and my beau) took several drama classes in secondary school. We livened it up a bit with some good improvisation.

Basically, the story is about two couples who go out camping. They get bored at the cabin and ring the local summer camp for suggestions on what they can do. The camp director invites them to camp out on an island on the other side of the lake. All is good until it begins to get dark. This is when the 'island primitive', a swamp monster begins to kill off the characters. First, my cousin gets tripped and carried off. She had an excellent blood-curdling scream; it was great! Then my cousin-in-law gets stabbed in the stomach. He was the lucky one who got to drink fake blood and spit it up all over the place. (It tasted like cherry drink mix and flour, yum! - not quite :? ) Then, of course, my beau dies with an axe to the chest; lovely. It looked so real! The people at the (real) summer camp walked by and thought someone had really died until my beau started waving at them; what fun! His death drives me compeltely insane (is that really far from the ordinary?) and I end up covered in blood and dirt, cuddling with an axe in a teepee, mumbling and freaking out. Eventually I die too with a knife in the neck.

In the end it turns out to be a story being told by a camp counsellor to some kids sleeping on the island. Or so you think... until you see the island primitive walking up behind her holding a sigh (those things they use to cut reeds... a blade on the end of a pole...)

Anyway, it was heaps fun, and I think I surprised a lot of people by how well I could act. I cannot wait to see the fully edited DVD version of the film, bloopers and all! (I am terrible for bloopers, I laugh a lot when I'm pretending to be scared...)

If people are interested, I will try to get my brother to make a low resolution version of his film to post on the internet. It could be quite lengthy, upto 45 minutes long, so the internet version might be edited more.

Movie tricks, acting, props, and improvisation are so much fun! I hope I'll get to do some more work with his films in the future! I learned a lot about making films too, what a great experience.

PS - Getting involved with mud and fake blood is great fun, I looked like a total train wreck!

Awesome! All the movies i have ever starred in (mostly ones my friends and i make) were pretty sad. There was however one very funny documentary type one on the way to see Texas Chainsaw Masacre. It shows the car ride there and the theatre for a minute and finally the car ride home. One of the funniest things i have ever watched... but enough about me. Sounds like a pretty awesome movie! On a side note one fake blood mixture that works really well is caro syrup and chocloate syrup with some red food coloring. Not only does it coat well and look cool but it tastes good as well. I have spent too much time in the theatre lol.....

So, after badgering my brother about making an internet version of his film, he gave me two options. 1. He could rip it into a 100 MB streaming video file. (About 20-some minutes long), or 2. He could do nothing...

So, if anyone is REALLY interested in seeing this stupid funny 'horror' B-movie, let me know. If I get enough of an audience, I may convince my brother to rip it for you to see!

It is really funny. The best part is with my Dad, the swamp monster/weirdo who kills people... He is hilarious... and yes... swamp monsters wear water shoes! Anyway... I should really get to work...

Yes, definitely. Although, two things.

A) Make sure it's downloadable so that I don't have to stream it.
B) There are definitely formats out there that are decent enough but that could get 20 minutes in in under 100 megs... they're just somewhat semi-low quality... dunno.

My brother is on vacation out of town until today. When he returns I will ask him to rip an online version of the film (I will give directions for direct download and streaming) and I will get him to do some Photoshop stuff for the Christmas camp shirts... but that's another thread... shhh... I never said that here!

Updates to come... (Don't expect anything too soon!)

Good Day Mates:

Thanks to the wonderful video stylings of my brother, we now have a DOWNLOADABLE version of his movie on the internet:

http://www.dimd.nait.ab.ca/~dlafleur2/island/

Sorry, to get it to stream it was more work for my brother, and I didn't want to bother him too much.

You CAN resize the player window so it is big enough to see. It will be slightly blurry, but I figured you could suffer with the 331 MB version instead of trying to download the 1 GB one.

CAUTION: The file is 331 MB. However, with a cable or DSL connection you will be treated to a very nice download rate of upto 150+ kb/s. Just click and 'save as' to somewhere on your computer, watch the video, and either keep it or delete it. If you click on it without 'save as' it will just ist there until you have downloaded it (about 10 minutes) and then play the video. It is up to you.

Enjoy!!! :D

I would love to hear your comments!

PS - I'm the main character. My beau is the gent with the dark hair and the blue sweater.
