USSRC Museum Changes

Good Day All:

I was looking through some of Richasi's photos from September 2003 this morning. I noticed a few things in the museum area I do not recall seeing before. I have looked at so many photos over the past 6 years that I can barely remember what the place looked like when I was there in 1998 and 1999.

Thus, I call out to everyone. How new/old is the wall of APOLLO? (The wall with items from the various missions.) Also, how old/new is that clear shuttle stack model?

Just wondering...

I haven't seen the pictures in question, but if the Apollo wall that I think you are talking about is the same one in the pictures it has been there at least 5 years.

However that model is in a new Shuttle exhibit that is upper mezzaine (sp) near the Land the Shuttle sim. The exhibit was opened last year and does a wonderful job of showing how the space program has improved life on Earth.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the clear Space Shuttle model has been there all 7 years I've gone.

That clear shuttle model (and if i'm thinking of the one you're thinking of -- the one that lights up to showcase the components) has been there for years, years, years.... just in different places. That model has been there for as long as 1988, and if I'm not mistaken, probably 1985 (my first visit to the USSRC). I'll have to look through some of my old pictures to see.

It may even be on some of the old postcars I have posted on my Space Camp site, www.azlance.com/~richasi/SpaceLink/HL3-10/ , but I doubt it.

Thank you all. I am nearly certain the clear shuttle stack has been there since my first trip as well. I do not remember seeing it, but I am remembering less and less of what was in the museum back then. (Oh dear, I'm getting old!)

I am very excited that I let my friend talk me into booking the earlier week of the Adult ASA programme. Now I will be able to see the Liberty Bell 7 while I am there! I promise to take lots of photos and post them online somewhere...

The model that lights up the different aspects of the shuttle stack has been there over 10 years.

You know what gets me... is that they have had the "robot arm" crane that you use to grab the foam bricks since at least 1985. I played with it some the last time I was there.

At least... I think they still had it. I'm getting old.

I can confirm that the foam block with grippers has been there since (at least) 1998. I remember it being there both of my times at camp. I also remember when we had a similar exhibit at the science centre here describing how doctors use surgical tools like this to perform laproscopic (spelling?) operations. Yes, I even mentioned they had something similar at Space Camp while I was at the science centre. I drive everyone crazy with my endless space facts and information.

It's been there forever.

At least the late 70's, for sure. Probably since the center opened.
