funny song about Wernher von Braun

Post by fish_ac »

Since i've noticed that space camp seems to have a slightly odd fixation with wernher von braun, i thought i'd post this song by an american comedian from the sixties named Tom Lehrer; sorry, i don't think you can download any of his stuff, but i believe i've seen some of his music @ media play in the comedy section, anyway......

WERNHER von BRAUN

Gather 'round while I sing you of Wernher von Braun,
A man whose allegiance
Is ruled by expedience.
Call him a Nazi, he won't even frown,
"Ha, Nazi, Schmazi," says Wernher von Braun.

Don't say that he's hypocritical,
Say rather that he's apolitical.
"Once the rockets are up, who cares where they come down?
That's not my department," says Wernher von Braun.

Some have harsh words for this man of renown,
But some think our attitude
Should be one of gratitude,
Like the widows and cripples in old London town,
Who owe their large pensions to Wernher von Braun.

You too may be a big hero,
Once you've learned to count backwards to zero.
"In German oder English I know how to count down,
Und I'm learning Chinese!" says Wernher von Braun.

Finally some filk music I understand! I don't get all that Trekker or Star Wars stuff, but that's pretty funny. We need to get a collection of songs like that and have a filksing at camp.

Okay, so that's a really geeky idea, but if it's Sara's team, it could turn into a lot of fun...

I received the "To Touch The Stars" CD in the post last week. (I won it in a contest!) It is really great for space freaks/geeks like myself. Not only are there songs about vonBraun, but Goddard is in there as well as the two fateful orbiters. Great CD. Next time you're in the music shoppe I recommend listening to it at the sound station. The music isn't for everyone, but it's worth the try!

None of the songs actually are about one person but they mention them. Example the fake Russian folk-song Surispe says
"You genreals once thought Von Bruan was a waste of cash
And Goddard needed treatment really bad."
And most of the songs predate the Coulmbia disater so they aren't really a tribute, it is spoken has it has not been lost.
One if the songs Dog on the Moon I think was play need the back round in Space Cowboys. The scene I think it is played is the scene where Clint Eastwood's chartcer and Tommy Lee Jones' character are arguing about who should pay the for the beer in the bar.
