AC Photos

Post by SpaceCanada »

I have never been enrolled in the Aviation Challenge programme, although I wanted to, and still want to. Courtesy of all you who have posted about AC, I have been able to learn a lot about the programme. However, I have never really seen any photographs of AC! (Besides the ones from Smurfs who were using the lake.)

I am a photo fanatic, so I'd love to see what kinds of photos you guys have, if any.

When I went to AC I failed to realize how much I was enjoying it untill I was gone. Sadly, because of this I neglected to take more than 10 pictures. I have seen some pretty cool ones though one way to find some is to search under google's images search. I can usually find lots of pictures of both space camp and ac under that. Happy Hunting!

I somehow had the same problem the first time I went to Space Camp! (or any camp for that matter...) I am usually one to have my camera EVERYWHERE with me, but for some reason it never really left the confinds of my flight suit pocket. However, next time I go to USSRC I will be sure to take heaps of photos!

I will take your suggestion and look up AC on Google's image search. (I have searched for Space Camp, but never AC - silly me!)

However, if anyone has any photos lurking out there... I'm sure everyone would love to see them!

That would be great! I have always wanted to learn more about the AC programme because I never got to go. :( Photos usually tell good stories, but if you have any great stories, feel free to share - I'm sure everyone will like to read them.

What is a typical day at AC like anyway?

If you want to e-mail the photos to me, let me know and I will give you my e-mail address.

I did the same thing for both of my ASA weeks. The first time I went I had to keep a journal to receive credits in school. The second time I went I kept a journal because I wanted to.

I would love to read your journal from AC. I don't know if you want to post it or not, but it might be a good way for everyone to see it. :)

(side note: If anyone wants to read my ASA journals, I can dig them up and type them out...)

Your account of AC Intermediate was a great read. It has furthered my interest in the AC programme. I hope that I will be able to go there someday. Once again, that will take some time, but I'll try! Goodness, it will be such a tough decision to choose which programme to go back to first, or maybe I'll do them back-to-back; even better!

Ive done AC Mach III this past summer and in years past. Its a great program, also doing it back to back with ASA is fun, having done that every time ive gone except my first year. But I suggest doing AC first, simply because it cam be more demanding than the ASA program in terms of making your bed and other things like that.

Ok, so this is kinda off topic, but I just realized you and I were in Huntsville at the same time. While you were at AC, I was at ASA.

Funny how you should mention AC being more challenging. I have grown up spending the past 14 or 15 years in Guides and Scouts, so I have the making the bed and folding the clothes thing perfected. We have also done a lot of the outdoor survival things, like procuring food and water, crawling through obstacle courses, rock climbing, backpacking, Search and Rescue training, etc. It has been heaps fun doing these things at local camps, but a week at AC with the flight training would be amazing. I can never become a 'real' pilot due to my binocular vision problem, but it would be nice to learn about the RIO position!

(I applied for a ROTC position a few years back as a Flight Navigator, as we call it in Canada, but I was rejected for some completely bizarre reason; nothing to do with my vision, but something in the back of my eye. A mate of mine with 20/10 vision got cut for the same reason! Of course, they'd accept me for any other position other than Pilot of Flight Nav, the only two I wanted... too bad for them!)

One thing i learned at AC is that scouting skills do come in handy at AC especially the survival training part of it. For example i was the only one able to start a fire with a flint and steel in my team. And even with the heat being outside so much never really bothered me since id spent plenty of summers camping for a week or more.

Did they tell you that the best stuff to start a fire are the small dead branches on the underside of evergreen trees? That stuff is always dry and always lights really fast.

They should make a 24-hour mission for AC where they are in a dogfight for so many hours, then when they get shot down they have to go outside for an E&E scenerio that lasts overnight. They have to go through a course, make a shelter, sleep in it, and then in the morning the would have to finish the course and get to safe ground/freedom. Could be interesting, don't you think?

Here is a site I found on the web looking up planes for the new spacecamp.com site. It has lots of pictures from years past, mainly 2001 season. However, most things havent changed awhole lot -- so this should give you an idea of what AC is like. The links are at the bottom of the page Gilmore made.

Note - I have not met Gilmore, he was here and gone the season before me.
