24 hour EDMs are back!!! We found out yesterday. Alumni of any program can come to one of three special ASA sessions this summer which are 7 days long and have a 24 hour EDM as well as many other cool things. Also, there is a 24 combat sim if you prefer to go to AC. Details to follow, now, sleep.

Session 36, May 29-June 5, 2004
Session 41, July 3-10, 2004
Session 46, August 7-14, 2004

You have to have previously attended a Space Camp program (or AC program if you want to do the special AC session).

Registration starts Saturday afternoon and grad is Saturday morning. The two tracks are Plt and MS. Tuition is $1,299. There is a $50 discount if you book before March 15. If you just came back from X-Mas camp, you can get it for $949 if you register before Jan. 31.

I don't know about the AC program (ask an AC counselor), but the Advanced Space Academy program is the normal one plus an added day of activities and mission training, special speakers and adanced instruction, a 24 mission that starts Friday at 9 am and ends Saturday morning, and a SCUBA EVA for select MSs as part of the EDM.

Capacity is extremely limited and (seeing as how this hasn't happened in 12 years), demand is expeected to be high. Booking starts on Jan. 7.

I don't quite get it.

To attend any of those weeks, you have to have attended camp before? Or will only certain teams from those weeks be able to have a 24 hour EDM? Also, what if I call now to sign up for one of those weeks? Since it's before January 7th, can I still go and not do the EDM, or would I not be allowed to register at all?

Also, they've increased the price just for those weeks (not that it's a bad idea, per se...)? Or is this a hike in tuition for ASA this year?

And it goes Saturday to Satuday...(just want to explicity confirm)

You said that "the two tracks are Plt and MS." What happened to the Payload Specialist track for those weeks?

And just to make sure I understand the AC part of it, they're going to be flying 24 hour missions at Aviation Challenge also during those three weeks?

Thanks for the info!

My understanding

My understanding and what they have thrown at us at the office is that there are NO MORE PAYLOAD SPECIALISTS period. New teams as we've been told will be a 50% mix of pilots and MSs.

I see this as a mistake, but they don't pay me for my opinion, only my skills. Not only does this limit your options when you attend camp, but it also seriously cuts down on the amount of people that get to dive. Pilots will still be unable to dive (unless of course you come to Adult Academy). MSs will still get to dive but I see this as a problem. The UAT is the closest thing to microgravity that any attendees will ever get to experience. Sure, pilots get to fly the sims at the lake, but I've always felt that was a waste. I understand that you have to be a military aviator to become Shttle Commander or Pilot, but to me, attendees are at camp to learn about the NASA aspect of becoming an astronaut, not the military one. Last time I checked, Shuttle Commanders and Pilots don't do simulated bombing runs or dogfights in San Diego anyway.

But again, they pay me for my skills, not my opinions.

I'm trying to verify some of this, but the Space Camp site is down. If I find that any of the following info is untrue, I'll be sure to let you know.

Obviously b/c of the 24 hour EDM there will only be one special alumni-only team each of those weeks. I believe there will still be other teams, though.

Jan. 7 is when booking begins for these special teams, other (non 24-hr EDM) sessions you can register for at anytime (and have already been able to register for).

The price hike is just for these special sessions because the program is longer and more advanced, and also because of supply-and-demand.

Yes, registration starts Saturday at 1 and grad is the following Saturday at 11, two hours after the EDM. This means that if you are a MS, you should not schedule a flight leaving before three PM on Sat. due to flying restrictions after diving.

I don't have many details on what's going on down at the lake for their special sessions, but they will be the same weeks, they will include 24-hr combat missions, and they will include more advanced training.

I just called the reservations department and though she didn't seem completely sure, the woman I spoke with told me that they weren't going to decide for sure on when the 24 hour EDM's were going to be held until "mid January"

Further, she said that the most likely dates they were thinking about would be

May 22-28
July 3-9
Aug 7-13
Aug 14-20

And she also stated that there wasn't going to be an additional fee.

She referenced an email in all of this that was sent out. She may simply just have older data than what Benji was reporting.

...I don't suppose anyone can forward me a copy of that email?

Anyway, there seems to be some conflicting information here, so if anyone knows anything more, please do post it here.

Thanks!

She must have had older info because I'd heard earlier that they were thinking about it. The counselors found out only a few hours before they told us about it and they gave us a sheet explaining it.

You don't happen to have a scanner and a little bit of free time by any chance, do you?

why would it cost so much more? is there more than just a 24 hours edm that teams would do that week and a team full of newbies wouldnt do? i wish it wasnt the summer before college..but if its not really that much money id like to try to convince my parents haha.

of course it would have to cost more. They have to pay for people to work it and all the work that goes into it.

That would make sense. Anybody got any idea how fast those sessions are filling up? I would love to sign up, but at this point I'm not sure if I'm even going to be in the country this summer.

You can't register until Jan. 7. I still don't know if I will be able to go. I haven't really talked to my parents about it yet because i got home at 12 last night.

The last one in August might work for me. It just kind of depends on which program I get into (if any) as far as when it ends and stuff.
