National Air and Space Museum annex

Post by ethlar04 »

The NASM is expanding to a larger location at Dulles Intl Airport. They are bringing out most of the artifacts that they have had in storage, Gemini VII Capsule, Enterprise and a Concorde jet. I am hoping to go some time this month, the Udvar-Hazy center is set to open on December 15. i plan to go later in the month to try and avoid the opening rush. I will try to take pictures of as much as possible and post them, but no promises.

I hope to get up there to see the new Annex sometime in the not too distant future. I especially want to see Enterprise and the concorde but i'd also like to see the F4U-1D corsair they took back from our museum last summer again. It was one of my favorite aircraft and was fully restored i hated to lose it. I know the volunteer coordinator at the museum where i work is planning a day trip up there sometime after it opens i hope i can make it. Its only about 4 hours away from here. And even though i'm about an equal distance from Kitty Hawk NC there is no way i'm going to go sit in the parking lot that will be kitty hawk on the 17th of December. Guess i'll just have to watch it on TV like most of america.

I was there on the 15th, along with all of the crazy media... It's amazing.

Apparently they only have about half of the aircraft in the main hanger, and the space hanger really only has Enterprise at the moment, but it is still incredible. The size of the aviation hanger is unbelievable - room for a Blackbird, the Concorde, the Enola Gay - and STILL lots of room left over for everything else. I think the Hornet+3 is the one from USSRC...

They let the first people in go to the first IMAX showing for free, which was nice, except they showed "Straight Up" which I've seen a dozen times... Oh, well, it was still a nice gesture.

I'll try and post pictures at some point...

While we await those pics, here's a link to the Space.com galleries: http://www.space.com/php/multimedia/ima ... ategory=se

The first gallery (as of now) is of the new Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.
