Six days or so until our Chinese friends expect to join us and Russia as a spacefaring nation. The Oct. 15 launch will be televised on China's national TV network, though the firmnes of the launch date is unclear. Thoughts?

I wish them the best of luck!

With any luck, we can get another space race going!

I was glad, too, though I hadn't even thought of a space race. I was thinking that the more people in space the better, especially if we can get along well.

You're right though, if the Chinese start getting ahead of us, our nation may get mad. Hopefully then a space race may start and we might actually get something done, so bring it on!

Well as much as i would love to see the Chinese getting to space ignite another space race i don't see it happening. The animosity that existed between the US and USSR in the 50s that ignited the original space race just doesn't exist between the US and China. On top of that our country is in the middle of a war that has no end in sight. I hate to be the downer in this conversation but i just don't see it happening.

I have to say I'm kinda with Jason on this one. I just dont see another large space race because for the most part the only race we could have left currently other than a moon base is mars and i dont think that even NASA would try to race that especially given the potential disasters that could occur with going to mars even if we arnt racing.

Oh and on another note relating to this. I read an article on space.com quoting buzz aldrin as basicly sying we should get the Chinese involved in the ISS especially since the russians have been less than up to par in some of their support for the station. He even suggested down the road maybe replacing the soyuz life boats with Shenzou capsules instead. Afterall they are atleast in part based on the soyuz anyway.
