Arlington

Post by Benji »

As you know (or should, anyway), I'm in Washington, D.C. My brother's godmother's late husband is buried at Arlington, so we went to visit.

I think what I did next was against the rules, probably even a felony, but I went to visit the graves of the 16 astronauts buried at Arlington. The numbering in most of the sections with the astronauts is very... odd, to the point where I was running around sweating (it was pretty hot) and in dispair looking for some graves.

Then it started raining. It was light at first, but it got pretty heavy. I had to go up and down some steep slopes. It was really terrible, but I managed to visit every last one of them, using a list from the Internet (http://www.mdw.army.mil/fs-p18.htm).

Regrettably, I did not get to Michael Anderson's grave, the 107 payload commander. :(

I have been there myself on my 8th grade field trip. My school was able to put a reef at the tomb of the unknowns. I think that the numbering is to do with when you died or when you got your purple heart or higher award.

I got to split off from the group to go visit the Challenger memorial, but I didn't have time for anything other than that.

Correction: I went back yesterday and visited Mike Anderson, Laurel Clark, and David Brown (sec. 46, graves 180, near the Challenger memorial, actually facing the poem High Flight), completeing the list of all 19 astronauts there.

I didn't realize it until a few minutes ago, but it is somewhat fitting that they were buried in the District of Columbia.
