The Aviation Challenge 'Manual' (the book they give you)

A place for ACers to come and hang out after a hard day of escape-and-evade or survival training.

The Aviation Challenge 'Manual' (the book they give you)

Post by maverick »

I remember that in AC we never were issued a book with survival instructions- however there was one AC spiralbound booklet that did show the survival techniques and basic dogfighting methods. I simply snagged it off the floor one time (nobody's name was on it). It was a Mach II book. Mach III never was issued a book.

Also I saw various incarnations of that same book with no survival info, just briefing on Top Gun rules.

A friend of mine showed me this book (not spiral bound) that simply had the specs of aircraft and the history of aviation and guidelines for PT.

This is complete contrast to Space Camp, where everybody got a book filled with space information, and the books were different for each level.

But the books in the SC programs have gotten thinner and thinner over the years...they used to provide 3-ring binders with information in them...then they moved to nice, thick spiral bound books...then for a year or two, smaller, thinner books were used during the week but they also gave you one of the bigger spiral books for a reference. Now, they're down to just the smaller books...

I think I saw that book being sold at the gift shop. Apparantly this is what they do with the old manuals now- sell them and shortchange us campers!

Yeah...the last year they gave out the larger books, it had a shiny new cover on it that said, "Throttle Up!"

You can now get them in the gift shop for 25 bucks...

The first 2 years i went we got huge spiral books full of information for space Camp and Space Academy Level 1. I still have both and still look through them for info ocasionally. When i went to AC in 96 we were given a small spiral book with info on dog fighting and aerobatic maneuvering and it was really all we needed at AC it gave you the checklist used in the sims as well as some other interesting info. When i went to advanced academy in 98 we got a slightly larger sppiral note book than the one we got at AC. It had some history stuff, mission info, museum info, some stuff used in leadership classes during the week, and diagrams of the control panels on the flight deck. The last 2 never compared to the first 2 but they were adequate for the programs. also the first 2 years i went they gaveus hats but not the last two.

Jason-

Did your book have survival information too?

I also noticed while picking up various manuals that the California version is different from the Alabama version in that the survival stuff is missing. Also the Mach I and Mach II books are nearly identical.

the first day at ASA we got a book (spiral bound, less than 1 cm thick), an ASA pen, and a free t-shirt.

Adults get cool stuff

Post by Kemara »

I did the Adult Advanced ASA Sept. 9-14. We got leather briefcases with the ASA patch on them. Inside were the Throttle Up book, a pen, lanyard for your badge, map of Huntsville and various other papers. The briefcases were very nice, but heavy to carry around even with the shoulder strap. Most of us just carried the small logbook and a pen everywhere. Oh, we also got the t-shirts.

Those books have been invaluable to me!

Anytime I've had to write some stupid paper for school, if given the choice, I'd do mine on space, camp, etc. I was almost always able to pull something useful out of those books!

I would be quite upset if I was just given a photocopy...

As a pilot at ASA i used the control panel diagrams in the book to study where the switches are. And at AC i used it during aerobatic training to remember excatly what each maneuver we were supose to do was.
