Gemini 4

Just thought i'd point out that today is the anniversary of the flight of Gemini 4. It included 2 major firsts. The first american space walk by Ed White and the first time the MOCR in houston was used to control a mission.

Cool! Thanks for the update. How in the world do you know all of these anniverseries off the top of your head? Do you have a calender or something?I'm horrible with dates though.

Thats why they call me a walking space encyclopedia. Actually i have a today in space history page. When i see something of intrest i'll try to post it here from now on.

And I thought I was a Walking space encyclopedia. At least that is what everyone calls me at school. The stuff I know isn't usually Space History because for whatever reason I am bad at it, but I remember lots of obscure things.

I remember a lot of random stuff too, but it usually doesn't involve dates. I was so relieved to find out our world history teacher wasn't going to make us remember dates for our final.

We were going to have to remember dates, but he decided to make it all essay and short answer. I couldn't move my hand after the exam (2.5 hours!), but I didn't have to remember specific dates. I was soo happy. The wierd thing is that I can remember dates for Apollo really well, but I am shaky on Mercury and Gemini. I will probably study before camp. I am such a loser like that.

That site is great. I don't like the design, but the info is extremely useful.

Yeah the layout isn't great but the info definately is. I visit the today in space history page daily.

Yes, but it is hard to figure out what is going on. Once you find the right info and everything, I have to admit though that it is pretty darn cool.

Well all I have to say about that is HOORAY FOR ED WHITE and being the first US person to do an EVA. Too bad he is no longer with us.

True i is sad hes no longer with us but his death and the death of his 2 crewmates helped save apollo from a potential disaster down the road and made the space craft much safer.

That's always how it works though isn't it? Some people die and then safety gets kicked up?

I would hate to see what would have happened later had that not been fixed. I did a project on this once, but it is still hard to say what would have happened. I think I read this somewhere...Gus Grissom actually argued against having an quick-jettisoning escape hatch because of the sinking of his Mercury capsule...very ironic.

I dont know if Grissom directly argued against it but the sinking of his mercury capsule did have alot to do with the first design of the apollo hatch. Later though they did install a diffrent quick release system for the hatch to allow emergence egress.

It's ironic the way that he nearly died because of a hatch that blew early and that he did die because of a hatch they couldn't get open.

True and alot of people have agreed with you on that Stargazer. It does seem very ironice and unfortunate. Ofcourse they didnt really worry about it in Gemini as much because the hatch had to have some type of quick releaase due to the ejection seat escape system.
