Earthquake near Huntsville

Post by ApolloXI »

Yesterday about 4:00 Am there was an earthquake in Alabama. I have not heard if Huntsville was affected but I think they where because parts of Nashville felt it. And I wonder what they did to keep the young ones from being to scared happy?

It was right near Huntsville. I got the following map from http://earthquake.usgs.gov:

Image

There were two, a small one, and one that was a 4.4. For more info: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsUS/ ... usteak.htm and http://earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsUS/ ... usteaq.htm

The earthquake measured 4.9 after all data was analyzed. The epicenter was about 1.5 hours northeast of here. It was felt in about 7 states: AL, GA, TN, MS, KY, SC, NC. Many of the counselors woke to the rumble at aprox 4:00 am central. Minimal damage was reported. None at camp though.
Now here is the strange thing. This quake started about 3 miles down. Quakes in Cali are usally no more than a half mile deep. It is the 2nd one on the same fault in less than a year that measures over 4 on the scale.
Unknown to most people the corners of Alabama, Georgia, and the adjoining part of Tennesee are home to the highest concentration of caves in the United States. As a caver and member of the NSS I along with several dozen cavers will be checking in on different caves to note any changes so they may be documented.
I have seen formations that would break if breathed on. I just hope the damage is minimal. I know it's nature but it would be sad to loose some of those formations.

When I was out in Las Vegas in 1999 there was a minor earthquake. It was so minor that I slept right through it =)

we had an earthquake here once! last year, it was really small though, i think it was actually in upstate ny but we felt it here. i would have slept through it because it was at like 6 am but i had an early softball game so i was awake getting ready for it.
that woulda been weird having one at sc. thankfully it wasnt bad. tornados would be weird too, i always wonder what it would be like if one came when i was there because they talk about how you like have to go into hab2 and stuff. i think it would be reallly scary but cool to experience if no one got hurt or anything.

We had a small earthquake here with the past year or two. Honestly, I would hate to do the tornado thing at sc. I am really paranoid of them due to the fact that when i was like 3 I was at the babysitter's house and all of a sudden things got really nasty and all of the TV's started showing warnings. I still remember eating pringles in her basement underneath a blanket and listening to the radio. Last fall we had a bunch of nasty ones nearby too. It doesn't help that there is a tornado siren less than 1/2 a mile from my house and we have warnings fairly frequently. I do enjoy watching thunderstorms though, just as long as there aren't tornados.

Well the big problem here isn't tornadoes or earthquakes it Hurricanes. We get threatened with them almost every year. Just imagine a really big servere thunderstrm, high winds, heavy rain, possibility of tornadoes, and flooding all over town all at once. I live on a peninsula with 2 major rivers on either side and the chesapeake bay on the other not to mention quite a few smaller waterways all through the peninsula itself. Needless to say we get alot of flooding hurricanes even if they are only tropical storm strength, Keep in mind max sustained winds have to be 75 mph or higher to be classified a hurricane so needless to say there is also wind damage. a few years ago we had 3 hit in a row luckily minor but the first one sat on us for nearly 2 weeks dumping loads of rain on us. Thes the second one came in dmped more rain and was more powerful the ground was so saturated trees were falling over verry easily then a third weaker one came through and knocked over even more. The second one also spawned 2 tornadoes in the area. Some of you might have heard about the second one it was named Floyd it especially hit Eastern NC hard but we had alot of damage from it here too.Thankfullt though it could have been much worse it was a category 5 at one point but weakened before making landfall.
