So, 2023.....?

Post by p51 »

To paraphrase Darth Vader, I find the lack of posts here to be disturbing.
Has anyone been to any of the programs at Space Camp or going this year?

I looked into the Cosmosphere yet they have no adult camps scheduled. They can accommodate you with a minimum of 5. Yet it's the chicken and the egg... They have no brochure since they have no regular adult camps so you have nothing to show anyone to generate interest. Tuition is cheaper yet you provide your own lodging and some meals. Everyone pays them directly.

I was part of the 2022 Adult Astronaut Experience. Basically a group of us requested it and they built the program around us. They gave us a list of activities and we built the program ala carte. Then after we built it, they opened it to the public. It was an incredible program. The training is every bit as comparable as Huntsville. They also have a Soyuz simulator, which Huntsville doesn't.

JoAnna sent me the activities list. Do you remember which you did in 2022? There's definitely a few that I would be interested in.

There are 2 different camp options Mars Academy or a STEM. Below are the activities available for each option.

Mars Academy

In Mars Academy, teams of campers will find out if they have what it takes to survive on Mars! Throughout the week, campers will learn what they would need to consider when building a colony on Mars, and on the final day, compete to see who can build the most successful Martian colony.

Simulated space mission
Museum tour/scavenger hunt
Dr. Goddard’s Lab
Planetarium
Documentary
Mission team announcements
VR
Challenge Course
Astronaut Training Sims
Radiation Challenge
Battery Challenge
First Aid Training
Law & Ethics
Documentary 101
Food on Mars
Settlement Mission

STEM Camp

In STEM camp, campers will experience the best that the Cosmosphere has to offer.

Simulated space mission
Museum tour/scavenger hunt
Dr. Goddard’s Lab
Planetarium
Documentary
Mission team announcements
VR
Challenge Course
Astronaut Training Sims
Rocketry
Robotics
3D Printing
Drones
Rube Goldberg Challenge
Living in Space
Apollo 13 Challenge
Leak Challenge
Battery Build
LOXIC
Build a Better Lander

But wait!! There's more! ;)

Mars Academy

In Mars Academy, teams of campers will find out if they have what it takes to survive on Mars! Throughout the week, campers will learn what they would need to consider when building a colony on Mars, and on the final day, compete to see who can build the most successful Martian colony.

Simulated space mission - Mission to low-earth orbit in our Astralis capsule simulator based on the Orion capsule. 1 team will be in the capsule and 1 team will be in mission control during the mission.
Museum tour/scavenger hunt
Dr. Goddard’s Lab - live science demonstration on rocketry
Planetarium
Documentary
Mission team announcements - Mission teams are announced (like the Artemis II announcement), and team take a mission team photo, and create a mission patch/poster.
VR
Challenge Course - work as a team to solve various problems
Astronaut Training Sims - 4G centrifuge, multi-axis trainer, and Soyuz trainer
Radiation Challenge - learn the basics of radiation and engineer a box to container a radioactive sample
Battery Challenge - learn how to build a battery out of pennies and washers
First Aid Training - learn basic first aid that will be "used" during the Settlement Mission
Law & Ethics - discuss how a Martian colony would operate (what laws would make sense, what do you do with people who break the law)
Documentary 101 - learn the basics of how to create a documentary. This knowledge will be used to document the Settlement Mission
Food on Mars - freeze dry food that will be eaten during the Settlement Mission
Settlement Mission - mock mission on Mars where settlements compete (or work together) for resources

STEM Camp

In STEM camp, campers will experience the best that the Cosmosphere has to offer.
Simulated space mission
Museum tour/scavenger hunt
Dr. Goddard’s Lab
Planetarium
Documentary
Mission team announcements
VR
Challenge Course
Astronaut Training Sims
Rocketry - build and launch model rockets
Robotics - program robots to go through a maze or build a robot for a mini-battlebot competition
3D Printing - learn the basics of 3D printing by creating a kazoo
Drones - learn how to take drone photography
Rube Goldberg Challenge - build a Rube Goldberg machine with a goal to "plant a flag on the moon (clay)"
Living in Space - presentation that talks about how astronaut eat, sleep, work and even go to the bathroom in space
Apollo 13 Challenge - recreate the carbon dioxide filter challenge. Mission control will walk you through the steps of making the square filter fit in the round hole. Will you make it in time?
Leak Challenge - on our ISS stage, teams compete to see who can find the most leaks in the space station
Battery Build
LOXIC - ice cream made from liquid nitrogen
Build a Better Lander - engineering design challenge to build a model lunar lander.

We literally got to pick and choose ala carte between the two programs but it was primarily the STEM program. We also added a trip the Strataca salt mine as well.
