Speaking of which, do you have to be certified to do that? Scuba that is.

Moderator: Split from a post in the SpaceCamp forum to here. These posts had nothing to do with the movie, but overall contain some information that could be useful to those that have never attended Camp/ASA/etc.

No you don't have to be scuba certified to do the scuba at camp. They teach you all the basic stuff you need to know like clearing your mask, clearing your respirator, finding your respirator if you lose it, and how to use the instructors air tank to breath if nessecary. You practice all that before they let you dive and they make sure you can do it first. Plus their is an instructor with you all the time so you dont need to be certified.

Yep it was always something i wanted to do too. I was glad i could when i went in 98. Unfortunately not everyone gets to for health reasons.

What are the health reasons? (other than the obvious asthma attack, etc)

Asthma and other breathing broblems is the main thing. I'm not really sure what the others are. A physician will have to sign off on you diving when you get your camp physical. But even if they sign off on it the diving instructors can still overide it if they think their will be a problem.

ahhh yes... the physical

i always hate the physical; and you have to factor in the cost of the physical with the price of camp since insurance never pays for it.

Well the physicals are never fun bu some insurance companies cover them mine always did.

Most insurance companies will cover preventative care. A physical by nature is for preventative care. I didn't really care about the last physical I had. But I forgot all about having to need one. Guess I should look into that too =)

Also check around atleast when you can still go to camp as a youth. Some places give cheaper rates for camp or sport physicals. Or atleast they use to.

If you want to SCUBA, keep in mind that pilots don't go SCUBA diving.

Well that change to the pilot program will really suck for those people who signed up before they made that change. But it still makes more sense for the pilots to go train at AC.

Hmmm, I was a pilot at ASA and every position during my week (including us pilots) got to SCUBA! It was awesome!!!

Well someone else who went to the christmas new years week of ASA said everyone did scuba. Maybe they didnt start not letting the pilots do it till the first sessions after the start of the new year.

I went over New Years. We all went SCUBA diving. That was the last week for pilots, I think.

Thats what i was thinking too Benji. Well i'm glad i went when they still had pilots doing scuba. Although i wish we'd also had a chance to go over to AC i know their have been changes at AC since i went and would have liked to have seen whats diffrent.

yeah, when they describe the different track options on the site and papers, its like mission specialist..blablabla scuba experience, payload specialist...blablablabla scuba experience, pilot..aviation challeng experience Note: Pilot track trainees do not participate in scuba training.

it would probably be really cool to go to AC stuff, but scuba will be really coold too. hmm..maybe if i ever go back after this time id do ac..but the odds of getting to go back again..haha yea rite.

well as i said before scuba is fun and i loved it but the AC experiance is more apropriate for the pilots to do.

I thought I would never get to go back after my first year and now I'm going for my third year. I'm a payload this time so I'll get to SCUBA. It's so much fun. The water is warmer than before and they play music underneath the water. It's fun to come into the window upside down and wave at people.

Well like you i was lucky to go more than once. As for the water i never thought it was to cold felt good to me.
