Well that probably explains why it seems colder then it did when i went because we still wore wet suits back then.

I think she ment cool not cold lol. Anyway you can still wear a wet suit if you want they give you the option. But the tank is alot warmer with or without one. They said they had it up to something like 93 degrees or so if i remember correctly. Some other medical reasons for not being able to dive are diabetes, heart conditions, ear problems, epileptic disorders. There are only a few things that they will say no to right off the bat like ashtma, dibetes and things like that. For the most part if they feel you are ok to dive then they let you dive. If they dont however you still get the option of swimming or snorkeling in the tank while your team goes down. I was not able to dive last year because of some paperwork issues and it was still fun swimming plus i got to take pics of my teamates doing stuff underwater, most of them didnt turn out but it was fun lol. It was an awesome experience for those of you who have never done it and i recommend it if you ever get the chance.

And i agree LB206 AC training would be more appropriate for pilots but given the choice i would SCUBA lol.

For anybody who is planning on going in the future dont let the lack of SCUBA stop you from being pilot its still one of the best spots to be in! And the AC pilot training stuff is fun to especially the zip line if they let you do that!

arugh. i have to go for my physical so i can dive and play softball tomorrow. NOT looking forward to it either. i really kinda nervous about scubadiving though. i have an intence fear of drownding cuz i almost did once snorkling in florida (so im going scuba diving..makse PERFECT sense) well i really do want to do it, but ah, im just scared ill like freak out or something. i dont think i will though. hm. how much time are you actually in the tank? oh and for girls, or about girls, do they really make you wear a 1 piece bathingsuit? cuz on the packing list it says one piece conservative bathing suit.. mines not one piece or conservative so should i get a one piece? or will they let me wear a two piece with a shirt over it or something, or they make you do that anyway when you dive?

Well as far as time in the scuba tank i didnt time it but actual time on the bottom is probably 30 minutes or so. And before you ever go to the bottom they will make sure you know how to handle any problems and wont let you go down till you can. Plus you'll have an instructor with you the whole time. As for the 2 piece swim suit their was a girl on our team who wore a 2 piece suit and just ended up putting th wet suit over it. but then ive heard they dont sue the wet suits anymore. I thought someone else said they were just allowed to wear a t-shirt over theirs but id get a 1 piece suit just to be safe if i were you. But maybe monkeynautt or one of the other girls can answer that question better.

They don't use wetsuits. Just a bathing suit with a t-shirt.

Does the wearing a t-shirt go for guys too? just curious because i would think the scuba vest would be pretty uncomfortable to wear with no wet suit.

I have done alot of diving without a shirt... in fact, i don't even need to wear weights when i dive without a wetsuit (wetsuits are made of neoprene which is positively bouyant so weight is needed to offset this). Anyway the BCD isn't really all that uncomfortable, as it is essentially weightless...

boys and girls both wear the t-shirt while SCUBA diving. As for the one piece, at SCUBA it shouldn't matter because you will be wearing the t-shirt but swimming at the AC lake is different. I don't know if you would be able to use a one piece or not. You could use the chat icon at the spacecamp website and ask them there.

Monkeynautt i think you mean 2 piece suit not 1 piece. A one piece wouldnt be a problem its the 2 piece suit that the camp doesn't like.

Suggest their shirts

Post by ApolloXI »

When I went in DEC. - JAN. they had shirts that you could borrow. I wore one of my own and it changed color because of the chlorine. You still should take a old shirt just in case they want you to wear your own.

Something i've ben wondering is. In some old pictures ive seen what appeared to be an academy level 2 camper getting ready to do scuba and they are wearing a space suit like outfit bubble helmet and all. I wonder when they use to use those for the scuba and when they stopped using it or if it was just a promotional thing.

Jason - when I was working at Advanced, some of the scuba instructors told me that they used to do Extended Duration Mission EVAs in the UAT. I'm not sure of exact dates, but a) it was not just promotional for the brochure, and b) I believe that it happened back in the day of the 24-hour EDMs.

I bet Smiley would know more about it... :)

I figured that if it was anything more than promotional it was probably a fairly old photo i seem to remember seeing it as far back as the 1989 brochure which is the first one i got. It couldnt be older than 88 though because before that it woud have been the old training center which didnt have the uat.

I really think they should bring back the 24 hour EDMs. When I was at Camp in March, I heard from multiple people that they were considering lengthening it to maybe 8 or 12 hours. Maybe this was just a rumor, so I am not sure. They said it may mess up the schedules or something.

I've read bringing back 24 hour missions is part of the eventual plan with the training center remodelling but not till after its done.

That would be super cool, but you would either have to make camp another day longer, or eliminate other things from the schedule.

Back on to the topic of SCUBA, do you know which famous engineer helped design the UAT at the USSRC?

The answer: Rocket Boy/Coal Miner/Author/Engineer Homer "Sonny" Hadley Hickam Jr. helped design the UAT shortly after serving a brief stint helping the STS-51L investigation.
