Geez, not one week-long adult program for the next year? I was so hoping the 4-day programs were leading somewhere...

The flip-flops with this camp can only be a drag on potential attendance, especially since the Christmas/New Year's holidays are in high demand when it comes to requesting time off from work. Then again, maybe it is another private camp put on the schedule in error.

I don't even bother looking for dates and such unless I'm trying to schedule a time I'm really going for. The wesbite redesign sucks and it's so difficult to find anything now and looking at the dates is just not worth my time for how much time it takes to get in there now...

A little bird says that there will be *4* teams for the October 4-day.

Does anybody from USSRC know the number of missions (shuttle, Orion) are on the team schedule?

I've heard there's a facebook SC alumni group going together for this, apparently filling out an entire team.

If it is the same as the August 4-8 session, which was arranged by the same group, we had 3 shuttle missions and one Orion Lunar Missions. The first 2 shuttle missions were one hour long. The third was a 3-hour extended duration mission and the Orion Lunar mission was 2 hours. We only had one adult team at that session, though, so they may have had to make changes to fit 4 teams in the simulators.

I count 19 and that same little bird said that she was forming them into 2 teams. Maybe there are others not listed...

They have their own patches and T's, I believe.

Either way (2 vs 4 teams) we're about 14 days from camp, and you know that's a good sign. I'm happy to be going back to camp!

Even if we aren't on the same team, I'm looking forwarding to meeting you guys.

Unofficially, there will be 3 shuttle and 1 Orion. IMHO, that's one too many until they fix that sim.

Right back at ya. Just look for the old coots who don't have that 'deer in headlights' look and totally different lanyards from everyone else (that, or wearing highly modified flight suits with oodles of patches). That'll probably be us...

Man, they still haven't fixed that? They told us a year ago they were having issues...

I was told that USSRC recently had two corporate camps with no Orion issues reported that she was aware of.

I think that the key words are "reported" and "aware of." Most people are not there to report problems and might not even realize that there were problems. Even if problems were reported, they would probably only go to the ones who need to know.

In other words, I'll believe that sim is fixed when I see it.

Well I say then the only way to see if the sim is fixed is to do a test flight.

If we do one in October, we will report back to the board.

Space Camp Orion Flight Test!!!

(Full disclosure: Ok, even if there are bugs, I've never done the Orion in all the years I've gone to camp...so I'm really excited to try it regardless...but to date the Enterprise is my favorite sim).

Justin, I'm going to Kennedy Space Center immediately before Camp this year with Steve and John (Phoenix PK) from this forum, we amost certainly won't see the actual Orion test capsule when we're there, but it will be there when we are.
So, knowing that, I'm sure I'm not the only one of us who'd love to strap into an Orion sim and give it a go.

I agree with you, Justin. Enterprise has always been my favorite too. You will be pleased to know that when I attended the August 4-day, all of the shuttle missions were done in the Enterprise. I was thrilled to get to do an Orion mission, though, because I had never done one before. It was great to suit up and go walking on the "moon" in the course of our mission to repair a damaged moonbase. And some of the other Lunar Mission Specialists actually did their EVAs in a 1/6 gravity simulator. I didn't mind that the part of the mission that was in the ship was a little buggy.

Enjoy The Cape. I was there at the end of 2012 and took the tour of the VAB. Man was that impressive. They had a few test articles for Orion in the main corridor; but I believe they were just there to test the fit (just like the shuttle Pathfinder) and prep for the real thing.

The Atlantis annex was in the final stage of being built; that should be exciting to see as well.

FYI, I probably share most people's opinions on sims, the 'Big E' is my favorite as well. Steve and I crewed the Atlantis one last year, I feel that he got gyped on a 'space walk' to an open wall in my opinion (I was the Commander, so honestly I didn't see any difference from the left seat in the cockpit). There were 4 teams and 2 used Atlantis and 2 used Enterprise. We got the short straw. I sure hope to use the Enterprise again!

Way back in my younger Space Camp adventure days (back in the early '90s) I was the shuttle Commander for an Atlantis mission (this was back when the sim was still in "movie condition"). I remember we had an anomaly on the space station were everyone was getting sick and I asked for permission to undock the shuttle. The Flight Director refused to let us leave. Sigh.

At the very least the airlock was closed, so we never got contaminated. On a subsequent Atlantis mission (as MS#1) we (Myself and MS#2) made an emergency EVA just moments before reentry to close the cargo bay doors manually.

Never got the chance to pilot or commander the Big "E"; I've always been a Mission Specialist. With the big cargo bay, it's certainly always been fun. Still...one can dream, right?

Who knows what October will bring.

Hi Tweeps! Hope you're having a great Friday. Can you believe it? ONLY 7 DAYS AWAY NOW!!! <and the crowd goes wild>
The 10-day weather forecast is looking excellent - mostly sunny (keep your fingers crossed!) and highs ranging from high 70s to low 80s and lows ranging from high 50s to low 60s.
I had the opportunity to get a peek at the schedule (shhh!! don't tell anyone) and thought I'd summarize briefly what it's looking like at this point (DISCLAIMER: SUBJECT TO CHANGE <mainly because they are still looking for opportunities to increase the awesomeness and squeeze in more fun if / when they can for you folks> You can expect a more detailed schedule upon your arrival
So here's the rundown:
Friday - Registration - Program Overview - Mission Overview - MCC Orientation and your first training and mission iterations in Shuttle sims
Saturday - Tour of the Saturn V hall with a REAL rocket scientist as your docent, second training and mission iterations in Shuttle sims, Low Ropes Course at the Area 51 Training Area and one team has their Extended Duration Mission Training and Mission while the other does their Orion Lunar sim training and mission
Sunday - Reverse team assignments for EDM and Orion Lunar, Zip Line at Area 51, Astro Training Sims, get the creative juices flowing for some Mission Patch Designs, and the highly competitive Space Bowl with all 4 teams competing!!
Monday - As you'll be about to get your wings you'll spend a few minutes with a representative from the Alumni Board / Association to hear how you can stay engaged after graduation, launch your Rockets you constructed, and GET YOUR WINGS AT GRADUATION!!!
You'll of course have other activities scattered across the 4 days including construction of model rockets, scheduled time for you to go off on your own and explore the museum, team photos, etc. It will be a PACKED schedule. On Saturday and Sunday for example - plan to start at 7:30-8:00a and end around 8:30-9:30p Oh yeah - and you never know what spontaneous awesomeness might break out that's not on the schedule.. after all... IT'S SPACE CAMP!!!
