Please Continue Adult Space Camp

Post by Planetling »

I spoke to the Space Camp manager about my ideas to keep the Adult Space Camp program alive. If enough support is found, keeping it may be considered.

My suggestions were as follows:

1. If the Adult Program coincides with the youth program, more parents would attend. I, as well as some others, feel uncomfortable leaving their children alone, especially being from out of state. It would be awesome and well worth it if I could attend the Adult Program during the same 1 week or 2 weeks that my child attends the youth program.

2. Offer both 1 and 2 week sessions. This would allow more flexibility with folks who don't have the money or time off, as well as the ones who could afford more time off and a few more dollars to spend.

3. How old is the movie? A lot of folks that I talk to don't remember the movie or have never heard of it. I know that when the movie was initially released, attending Space Camp was all the rage. If attendance has been down over the years 3D or iMax would certainly invigorate interest again.

4. Space history is important, but looking and working toward the future is too. If Space Camp would incorporate classes or programs that stimulate future ideas or missions, both youth AND adults would feel more part of something.

If any of you happen to stumble across this topic please express your interest in keeping Adult Program alive by replying. Also, express your support to the Space Camp management and counselors too!

I agree that the Adult programs are worth saving. I have attended them 6 times since 1988. I would hate to lose them.

Correct me if i'm wrong but they are only eliminating the week long program correct?

Not that thats good but atleast the weekend program would still exist. I agree with the above statements though.

Also an attempt is being made to incorporate missions based on future plans into the program but to my knowledge is still not up and running.

Yes, my understanding was that the weekend adult programs will continue. For many of us, it's too far to go for just a weekend.

I agree.
I really want to go back for another adult program sometime in the near future. But the cost of transportation in addition to the program makes it more difficult to justify doing just a weekend.

Plus, I want MORE. More than can just fit into a weekend. I want to scuba and do an EDM and fly the sims at AC. I want to spend time at Area 51 (low ropes as well as high) and launch model rockets and hear more (good) lectures. I want to get to know other geeks like me who are on my team. I want to get to know the counselors, cause they're fun too. And all of that takes more time than is available over the course of a weekend.
