Why you should go to Space Camp after 20.

Post by Kemara »

After reading the graduation topic, I thought I'd list all the "extras" that the adult ASA program has. Since I never went to ASA as a teen, I can't say if they don't have them too, so correct me if I'm wrong. Also, with the financial problems, these may change.

1. Adults are allowed to enter and leave the campus at any time of the day or night. Most teams and their counselors head over to the bar at the Marriott (Oasis?) after the day is over. Several of my teammates regularly got in at 2 a.m. every day!

2. Welcome package- This is a leather briefcase/3-ring binder with an ASA patch which contains: lanyard for badge, spiral-bound logbook, pen, map of Huntsville, brochures.

3. EDM Breakfast- Breakfast on EDM day is steak and eggs (yes, kids! Just like the astronauts!). Steak is there for anyone who wants it, and there are slips of paper with omlete ingredients. You mark what you want and they make it for you to order. And speaking of food...

4. Adults get better food. I'm serious....I asked one of the food service people when they led us away from the kids hamburgers towards the baked chicken..."You guys get better food, they said. I agree. Some things are the same, but there are advantages to age.

5. I'm not sure if ASA does this, but each adult team has a cake made with their patch on it. After they take your picture with it, you can eat. it.

I can honestly say that the youth ASA program gets none of that. I almost wish i had gone to adult ASA i was old enough. But then i think how awesome my team was and i'm glad i went to the youth program.

Jason, don't worry....you'll get there yet if I have to come up there and drag you.

One more thing I forgot to mention....Adults have to obey the PDA rule, too. No men on the women's floor and no men on the women's floor. During the week I went, my team had 3 married couples. After Sept. 11, the staff moved the children over to Hab II, and since it was just us adults left in Hab I, people jumped rooms. The couples got their own rooms, other folks who were fed up with their roommates snoring, got a room alone. It was just the 35 of us and the counselors in the whole building, so no one cared. But those were unusual circumstances. Some of the adults got rooms at the Marriott after they saw what the Hab rooms were like. They walked over every morning for breakfast, but they had be pay extra for the room, of course.

adult ASA

Adult ASA sounds really cool. I think it might be worth trying in a few years. Hearing about it really helps soften the blow of not being able to go to youth ASA again.
I have been to space camp four times and i hope to go to adult camp when i am over 21.

I wish they had a week long adult AC program too. The youth one was alot of fun and id love to go back as an adult but its too expensive for just a weekend.

you're not allowed into the bar in the Marriott unless you're 21 or older...they even have a sign on the door and everything! But I doubt they enforce it to the letter...

Here in Alberta the legal drinking age is 18. I turn 18 in 7 months. Wohoo!

It depends were you are. In B.C. it's 19 and out east it's either 19 or 21. Alberta has the lowest drinking age.

come on, the drinking age maybe older here, but its insanely easy to get fake id's and besides its hardly ever enforced.

True and frok what i've heard alot of bars in Huntsville done even bother checking ID. That was from someone who lives there and works at the space and rocket center. I don't know about the Marriotts bar they might but he says some dont.

Back on topic.....
It would be cool to go through camp as an adult. You'd have more freedom but still all the fun!!! (You could be a kid again)
