Cup Crazy
So... a Canadian moment for you all... it's the Stanley Cup playoffs right now for the National Hockey League. My (more-or-less) home team is in the second round. They have a game tonight.
Go Oilers Go!
Things have been a little more crazy than usual around town, but nothing out of the ordinary for playoffs time. Kids are out on the boulevards wearing blue and brinze, jumping up and down with 'Honk for the Oilers' signs. Our cul-de-sac (keyhole crescent) turns into a car park on game nights. Every other car has an Oilers flag flying from the antenna or off a window clip. One car had 16 flags on it - I counted... Businesses show their support with flags and posters and decorations too.
It's blue and bronze season... cheer for the Oilers! (If you don't want to cheer for te Oilers, then cheer for the guys playing the Sharks - we cannot let the Sharks win.)
Okay... I had one of those Canadian hockey rave moments just now... I'll go back to my usual self in a minute or two...

I grew up as a fan of the NJ Devils... I have a feeling that their next game may be their last until the fall. so sad

The Oilers are in the finals now... They lost their star goalie to injury in the last minute of the last game, losing them the game. Looks like we'll be using back-up goalies for the rest of the series, which makes a lot of us nervous. These are some tense moments.
Watch the game. Cheer hard. Go Oilers!

I know, things don't look too good for the Oilers right now, but I'm still cheering for them. Maybe Ward will come back to his home town (minutes from Edmonton) and be distracted.
I do give credit to Carolina for playing a good game, but I'm still an Oilers fan, and I'm still hoping they'll win, no matter how bad things look. We're playing in Edmonton tomorrow and Monday, so hopefully the home crowd will help them out.

How about them Oilers now??
Back to Edmonton they go... one more in the bucket for the Oilers! Next game is on Saturday at 6 PM Mountain time, 8 PM Eastern
Fernando Pissani's goal was beautiful... gorgeous... spectacular!
Go Oilers!!
Why do Canadian cars have horns?
To use as noisemakers when their hockey team wins.
You don't even need a TV or radio to follow the game here. People make noises of all sorts when the Oilers score or win a game. Car horns are fully abused on game days. People line the streets at intermission and after the game to show their support. It's great!
Edmonton untilities has never seen such spikes in water usage before. Everyone in town is watching the game, and intermission means toilet break... you do the math... huge water usage spikes. Funny how hockey games can do crazy things to a city.
I need to go get some more water, my throat is sore from all that cheering last night.

Well, Carolina won the Stanley Cup, and their amazing goaltender, a rookie no less, Cam Ward, won the Con Smithe Trophy for Most Valuable Player. Way to go Caroilna!
The Oilers shouldn't be put down though, as they defeated all odds. They were the lowest team in the standings and they came out as number 2. We're all very proud!
Oh, and Cam Ward is from around here. He played on my hometown team for a few years before he was drafted. He's getting married in two weeks. The Oilers have a joke going around that they're going to show up and pick on Cam at his wedding.
Ah yes... back to the normal schedule... no more rushing home to cook supper and speed bike to my uncle's place to watch the games. (Watching hockey on a 52" HDTV is unbelievable!)
Cheers to all!
