Saturn V Restoration

Post by ApolloXI »

As most of you know that the USSRC, the State of Al, and various others are having the Saturn V at the USSRC restored to her full glory. A year ago I donated some money to the campagin. Of course I got the typical thank you letter from the Commitee but a couple of weeks ago I got a letter and artist drawing of the building they are placing it in.
I will have the pictures up asap I can get my place to upload them.

Kudos for the donation!

I received the same letter also.

...they got the amount I've donated wrong, mind you (not that I'm dwelling on that or anything! :D) ...but, hey...it's nice to get updated!

oh, that's where they're planning on moving it now? I've heard so many different proposals...

I am so lost too if they can move it or not. There might be some loop holes in the law such as if the landmark is in a spot where it would not be safe they could move.

The whole national historic landmark thing seems tricky to me. We have several at NASA Langley Research center. Including a hangar, gantry crane, and 2 wind tunnels. Well due to budget ccuts and not beinag able to maintain them their are plans to tear down the gantry crane and 2 wind tunnels. Which apatrently is legal as long as the sight has a marker left there saying they were there.

I heard they can't be moved, but I'd also heard plans to move it to where rocket launch is (and also, now to where the Saturn V mock-up is). I've also heard discussion of building the building around the current location of the Saturn V - I don't think anyone knows really what they're gonna do yet.

the landmark deal might be more along the lines of it cannot be removed frm display at the USSRC, but they can relocate it to wherever they want in or around the facility. i dont think there is any historical significance to the saturn V sitting where it is right now.

just thoughts here, if im wrong someone set me straight.

Hmm... seems they have changed the location... I know for sure they used to tell us it was going to be by rocket launch (someone else just said this, I know)... now they're putting it on one far edge of the facility? I'm still trying to decipher that image, seeing as you see a road that appears to be right next to Rocket Park, and that confuses me... you can't seem to see the other buildings in the image! The best I can guess, they're putting it straight through Space Shot or right next to it. Anyone have any better spacial ideas than I do?

the area 51 that you're thinking of is no longer being used. A new high and low ropes course has been built in the former "Helicopter woods" down at AC, and fenced off, and that's where the new Area 51 is.

As for the new proposal, I think they're planning on putting it where the old HR offices are (they're moving them to where the J300 trailer was). Everything is being reorganized and being rearranged. So yeah - it's complicated.

area 51 is not GONE, it's DIFFERENT. It's better (from what I hear - I'll let you know from first hand experience after next week, but it looks wicked awesome).

Does no one listen? Oh wait, stupid question - I know this answer; I'm a counselor. :-P

I think high and low ropes could be fun! We had stuff like that at my old summer camp - you couldn't get me off the stuff - I was addicted. It is sad to hear that the old Area 51 is gone, but I'm sure the new one will be just as good.

Yeah, same here. I understood, it's just the Area 51 I knew and loved is gone. Perhaps it's appropriate, since I'll never be back as a camper.
