Space Camp Alumni Relations

So I'm wondering: I know that some people who've been here get postcards asking them to apply, but I know I didn't, and I'm wondering what kind of alumni relations space camp has with the people they wind up hiring - how many are space camp alum? Do they seek out those people, or is it people like me who refuse to go away?

Talking to counselors about this over the years they've told me that the many of the counselors are people who went to camp as kids and then applied to work there later. I was told last year that having attended space camp would give you some amount of edge (as little as it maybe) when you apply. However this is just information that i've gathered from many different sources so the actual statistical stuff might be different.

All returning couselors and camp alum are considered before any "first timers". However you still have to qualify for all other requirements.

right, but do they actively seek out the alumni, or do they just assume that some of the alumni will apply?

I have never heard of them seeking alumni before. I think the people who may get post cards asking them to apply are counselors who have worked there in the past. However, i could be wrong on both accounts lol.

Not just former counselors get the post cards. I have gotten several in the last few years. Sorry for dragging up an old topic but i'm a bit behind.

What are on these post cards you speak of? I have never had such a post card delivered to me... could be because I live outside of the United States...

The post cards were sent out to some i guess and not others. They were encouraging people to apply to be a counselor.

I came here in 2000 and 2001 with Skywalker - she's a year older than I am, and she recieved a post-card earlier this year in feb. She came here twice, I came here 8 weeks over the course of 5 years, and never once got one of those - I barely even got a response when I sent in my application.

Now they're so desperate for counselors - they're training the sims counselors to be team leaders and hiring new people to be sims counselors. they're also switching people around down at ac to be Mach III counselors and such.

I find it kind of ironic, because if they courted their alumni more, they'd probably have no problem getting enough counselors for a summer.

course it might also help if they treated us a little better.

Dangit... if they'd just lower their requirements, they could hire me!

I don't want to wait two years!

At least I'll have Turkey next summer.

REALLY!
The amount of required credit hours is pretty high.

Is it? I didn't really look...

Hmm... lemme do the math real quick... 3x3 + 1x3 (lab) + 1x2 = 14 hours for my first semester... hmm... hopefully I can get away with that with AP credit and a certain one credit hour at UAH added on...

You're still kinda far away from 60... I'll likely be applying next summer as i will have fulfilled two years and i'll probably have 60 credit hours.

Yup, far from 60, but not far from 30, which would be leading me on the way to 60.

the 60 hours means you've finished the second semester of your sophomore year of college generally.

If you've got a lot of life experience (military) or if you've been a huge repeat camper, they'll often give you a waiver and hire you sooner.

COOL!

After my Freshmen year I should be hitting around 45 to 50 hours, but I don't think I'm going to hit 60 until my sophomore year.

I was walking with Lurch yesterday and while we were talking he actually suggested that I apply for next summer b/c he thought the HR people would waive it since I'm a repeat and will go into my Frosh year this fall with almost 30 credits already.

...where'd you get all those credits?

I assume that I, myself, will try, but I don't think I'll get in... which is why I'm going to apply to Turkey, also...
