We don't take finals yet. We graduate on May 23 and finals start in the middle of June. We have three weeks of school and then finals.

So you graduate without taking finals?

Ok to me that makes even less sense.

It's just the ceremonies. They can't have it after finals because it takes up to 3 weeks for finals to be marked because it is done by the government. In the fall so many people are gone off to university that they would miss the ceremonies. Having it now is the only way for everyone to make the ceremony. Most of the schools in Alberta do it this way.

Most of the school around here use the scantron system so it doesn't take too long to grade.

our seniors take their exams a few days earlyer than the rest of us then they dont have to go to school on our exam days and come back on a friday night for their graduation. like this year, their graduation is our second day of exams. so they dont have to be there that day or the day before it.

Teh written response part of our exams has to be marked by the government hired teachers. They have to mark every grade 12 exam in the province so it is no easy task. The multiple choice is machine marked so that part doesn't take long.

If we waited for finals to be marked it would be mid-July before grad. Some schools have grad after finals but final marks are not yet in. Before grad though, teachers have a good idea who will graduate and who will not. Your marks have to be at a certain percentage before you are allowed to participate in Grad.

Our final exams are secured so no one can write early. Every grade 12 writes the exam on the same day at the same time so it is fair and no one can cheat. We also have to have a certain amount of teaching time before finals so it is impossible to write early.

Well our exams arent standardised among the schools they are generaly made up by the individual departments in each school or in come cases by the teachers themselves. So the teachers also grade them so we dont have to wait for grades.

Only grade 12 exams are like that because they are diploma exams. Other grades are just marked by their teachers.

ours are the same way. each teacher writes their own exam and grade it themselves. sometimes if theres two teachers for the same subject, theyll write the exam together and give the same one but not usually because every teacher covers the material slightly differently and stuff.

Well our state now has whats called SOL testing or standards of learning that have to be passed at certain grade levels in order to move on. Ofcourse your senior year is one of the years you have to pass to graduate. They test students in math, social studies english etc. But the year i graduated was the last year they weren't required.

Yeah we have so many mixed classes with seniors and juniors and sophomores that there is no way they could take finals early at my school. However, the seniors can be exempt from their finals if they have an 85 average or above for the year. I have to take 5 finals next week because Im only a sophomore and I really really don't want to. I have an AP Spanish final at 8 and a History final at 1.

Well one thing about the SOL's i mentioned above is most of the teachers hate them It doesn't allow them much creativity or variety in what they can teach. They have certain stuff that has to be taughtso thats what they have to concentrate on.

We have to take the FCAT before we pass certain grades. It is really a worthless test, but the techers get stuck teaching it.

Grade 12's can't get exempt from final exams but you can in grades 7-11. Your mark has to be 80% or better.

Well here in VA we also have whats known as the LPT or Literacy passport test. This test you take in 6th grade and if you pass it then you never have to take it again but any part you dont pass has to be redone every year of middle school till its passed. The test has Reading comprehension, Writting, and math on it. All 3 parts have to be passed to get out of middle school. Most people pass it there 6th grade year but a few dont and have to keep taking it.
