I went to Russia back in high school, and I learned a (very) little Russian before I went, but it was enough to be able to sound out words...little did I know then, it might also be useful at Space Camp some day!?!

Russian...that's funny

Whomever that counselor was that said 'Discovery' was being refit to a Russian Whatever was so uninformed its not even funny. 'Discovery' was simply updated to the new software and hardware package. And that is all that was done to her.

Where is and what is this 'disco' MOCR you speak of?

In 1998 and 1999 we used a different MOCR, but I don't remember where it was... I do remember that it was sloped, it had several rows of computer stations, and a projector screen at the front with a TV on either side. If this is the 'Disco' MOCR you speak of, where is it located? (So I may put my mid to rest.)

Thanks!

DISCO

DISCO MOCR (as of this summer) was right by the SIMS pit, right across from where DISCO (again, as of this summer) is itself. Also, the talk of DISCO changing to a russian soyuz capsule actually was floating around the TCF this summer and some talk came from Sarah, Smiley, and J on the TCF. So it wasn't someone making it up, it was an idea at one time. And I still know counselors who are at space camp, and the latest word I hear is that in fact DISCO was going soyuz. So who really knows whats going on.

Well, we tested it out as a Buran and it worked just fine...

That was, of course, after Atlantis exploded... :)

Yeah it was great as a buran. Except that some of the panels were missing but that could be cause we were using the ones from our previously exploded shuttle.

This is the MOCR we used back in 1998 and 1999. Where is/was this MOCR room located? Is this Disco MOCR?

The MOCR in your photo is the old Enterprise MOCR (And oh how I miss it)!

It was located through the Bush Room, up the stairs and to the...left (or was it right?!)!

The truth about Disco

Disco is both getting an upgrade and becoming a soyuz. Disco was upgraded when someone woke and realized that camp couldn't run with only 3 orbiters. The current plan is to have a dual level mission control with one as an American shuttle mission control and the other will be a Russian soyuz mission control. So Disco will be used as both an american shuttle and will have overlays for when it is used as a russian soyuz. Again this is only the current plan and we all know how often things change at camp.

I knew it was up some stairs... What/where is the 'Bush Room'?

I loved the old MOCR as well, with the projection screen and tiered computers like in the 'real' Mission Control. However, the new MOCR has its advantages as well, such as the updated software, rolling chairs, and the ability to see everyone without turning in circles and choking yourself with the headset cord. ;-)

The Bush Room is the main security area.

So-called because when President Bush (the first one) came to visit, they had to keep him there until the Secret Service could hunt and kill wondering insurgents.

...No...that's not it...I think they just needed to secure the area. Yes, that must have been it. So he had to wait in the (at the time) "If we could only get a President to wait here we could name it after him" room until everything was good to go.

I definitly like your version of the story better Vincent. Wondering insurgents will always perk up an otherwise bland story!

Isn't that an element of realism, though?
