Well although it's been 10 years i seem to remember his lecture being rather boring as well. But then i was more intrested in the manned exploration of space always have been so astronomy just didnt seem that intresting to me. Especialy since he was a member of Vonbrauns rocket team i would love to have heard him speak on his time working with Vonbraun in the early days of the space program.

A lot of people fell asleep during his lecture when I was there too. I remember having a teammate on each shoulder. Also, our counselor fell asleep. The worst thing you can do witha bunch of tired teenagers is stick them in a dark, cold, room for two hours.

Well i didn't fall asleep although it probably wasn't easy and i wouldnt be suprised if others did. What i'd like to know though is whatever happened to the room we had lectures in when i was at academy. From what i remember it was an almost auditorium like room. It was fairly large with enough seats for everyone at academy that week and probably more. I do remember it was located in the same building as the museum and training center but i never saw it before or after that year. At camp we used the team room in Hab 2, at Ac we used the class rooms over at the AC complex either in the barn or above the sim room depending on the briefing, and at ASA the briefings were either in the trailers behind the habs or one of the small classrooms made out hab 2's team room. So what ever happened to that big room in the museum i don't know.

When I went, it was cold out, so the heat was on. It was warm in the room and Dr. von T's accent kind of lulls you to sleep. Thankfully, he didn't detect anyone sleeping.

Well here it is we're up to thursday the last full day at camp and it was a busy one. We had our rocket launch which i seemed to fail to mention but we had been working on those throughout the week. Mine flew great infact a little too well it ended up on the other side of the highway and they wouldn't let us get them overthere.

We also went to Marshall and got the tour. we got to see the engine test stands, the vibration test facility the UAT and the Space Station Freedom mockup. As well as went past aviation challenge a place i thought i'd never go to but would end up there 3 years later.

Back at camp we did the multiaxis trainer which atleast this year i didn't get sick like the first year but this year it was before lunch instead of after. And we also did our moon base presentation.

And then the other highlight of the week our second shuttle mission this time with Discovery. ALthough i was dissapointed i wasn't in the cockpit or the station i was happy to be doing something important as SSO. Again there were a couple of problems that probably helped to contribute to us not winning best mission. The main one being the commander failed to get the sattelite predeploy checklist done on time which was a big mission objective. But atleast there space station didn't fall out of orbit this time. Then when we were abpout half way thrpough the mission something unexpected happened. Someone somewhere in the museum pulled the fire alarm causing us all to evacuate the building. Needless to say it was in the 80's outside and we had 3 Mission Specialists in already hot space suits. So we all went over under pathfinder to help keep cool. Eventually we went back in and the mission was completed. Although there were other problems mainly with the commander keeping up with the time line. But we all knew the guy was a goof off to begin with kind of like Kevin in the movie except he never got serious. We often joked of sneaking into the training center at night before there mission and painting over the name discovery and painting the name disaster on the shuttle. But the mission did end successfully.

I realised this was it the week was almost over all there was to do was graduate and go home. As you all know thats a verry depressing feeling. Especially since i didn't know whether i'd beable to return a third time. Obviously i did but it would be another three years.

Well tommorow will be the graduation and the trip home. As always questions and comments are welcome.

Thankfully, we really didn't realize how close graduation was because our EDM was the last day and we were all looking forward to it. They did have to cut some time out of it though so we could make it to graduation on time.

Well at ASA graduation day is ussualy a pretty full day. Especially since ASA doesn't graduate till late afternoon. At Space academy graduation was in the morning so it wasnt much time left after that last night. But more on graduation tommorow.

my last day at asa was really short and rushed, cuz we graduated at 11 with the academy kids..i dont know if they usually do that in the spring, or if they just did it because there was only 1 asa team and very few academy teams. but 2 yrs ago when i graduated from academy it was also in the morning, and the asa kids didnt graduate with us, but there were more academy teams. i wish we had graduated later in the day so we could have had more time together, but that would have meant getting home even later than i did. i left camp around 2pm and wasnt in my house until midnightish.

Well when i went to ASA i dont think we even graduated till 2 or 3. That day we also did space bowl and went to Marshall as well as went to a park for a picnic. ad i've heard thats not too uncommon so i'm guessing you probably graduated early because of the low numbers of people. But your right i didnt get home till late at ASA it was around 1 am i think before i got home.

I graduated at 4 pm both years. I also flew out the day later both years. My first year I flew into Calgary at 12:30 in the afternoon but then still had a 3 hour drive up north to my house. In 2002 I flew into Edmonton at around 11pm. I live right by the Edmonton airport so it wasn't a long drive. This year I am probably flying out of Calgary again so it will be a 3 hour drive home.

Well thankfully in good traffic its only about a 20 minute drive to the closest airport. However to get there you have to go accross the James river through the Hampton Roads Bridges Tunnel and if there is an accident in there or they are doing repairs it can take several hours to get to or from the airport. But Anyway.

Here it is the last day. I still remember it so well. We got up that morning showered and packed up whatever we weren't wearing or hadnt packed the night before. I couldn't believe camp was over already. The night before we mad4 sure to get everyones addresses and phone numbers although back then none of us were among the small few who had email addresses yet. We took our bags downstairs and put them on the first floor of the hab over by the money exchange place. Also those of us who had gotten shuttle bucks exchanged them. (I actually hadn't that year because i'd gotten there so late the first day and hadn't had a chance.) We went to breakfast one last time just trying to savor our last few hours together before graduation. After breakfast we went to the training center one last time. Ouer counselor gave us a chance to do any sim we wanted again except the shuttle mision ofcourse. Since most people wanted to do the multi axis trainer we did alythough i passed. After a grewasy breakfast and my bad experiance the first year i didn't want to risk it when i still had a long day ahead of me. But i did get to go into the Atlantis Simulator where the interios space scenes of space camp the movie were filmed. Wow i was overwhelmed it blew endeavour or columbia away. I thought it was an academy 2 sim actually because we hadn't heard anything about it. I found out diffrently later but i was glad i got that chane. We would have gone and seen Enterprise too but a Academy Level 2 team was in the middle of a mission at the time. Just before Graduation we filled out evaluations.

Then the sad moment came. We went out under the Pathfinder and took our seats. Our graduation speaker was Ed Buckbee head of the Space and Rocket Center and Space Camp at the time. It was the first time i'd ever heard the story of how space camp came into being as he told us some of how he and Wherner Vonbraun had first discussed it. He also read us a letter from a 1986 graduate who was now at the Naval Academy. Then we graduated recieved our wings, team photo, and certificate. Afterwards we passed them around the team and everyone signed the back of the photo. Then it was over we dsaid our goodbyes and many peoiple went home with family.

A few of us were left thoughh they took us back to that big briefing room i mentioned earlier. There we sat and talked and sat and sat and sat then went to lunch then came back and sat some more. That was a boring depressing day with nothing to do. My flight wan't till late afternoon. Ofcourse eventiually we left for the airport. I was flying back through Atlanta again still as an unacompanied minor. But on this go around i really hated that status. The flight to atlanta was fine but once i got there i was supose to go to a rec room Delta had for kids who had layovers. Well it was closed for renovations so they put me in a security office for 2 hours with nothing to do and a guard who could care less. So i got something to eat and eventually caught my fligjht home. I got into Norfolk around midnight that night and my dad was there to meet me at the airport. It had been a long day so i came home and went to bed. The next day was just like any other back to having to do chores and try to get some of the schoolwork i';d missed done. And on Monday it was back to school till june. All in all it was a long day and not a verry good one but it eneded my second spoace camp adventure. Maybe more will come in the future with my ASA trip and AC trips.

My flight out in 2002 wasn't until 3pm the next day so I was the last ASA to leave. All my friends I had made had already left. I went to the airport at 1pm and American Airlines (I was on Northwest) had been delayed so my friends who had left were still at the airport. I was with them for 30 mins or so and then both of the flights were boarding so we left. It was a really long day. I had two connections to make which made it a really long day.

Well i was glad i did years later because it helped me find my counselor from that year online. I don't know if ill do the AC or ASA this year like this i might wait. And if i do it will be one or the other since they both overlap on dates for the most part so it would beasier to do one at a time. Also i think it would be cool if other people could do something similar.

It will be two years this August since my first trip but I probably won't do something like this for a few more years. It's really neat to read your story LB. I get to find out more in depth about camp and academy since I never went to them.
