Well i did at one point but now medical problems and physical limitations will make me ineligible. I would still like to work for NASA though.

I've considered working for NASA in 2 ways based on my 2 most likely majors. Either as a staff psychologist hopefully working in the astronaut selection office if i pick psychology as my final major. Or as a NASA historian if i choose history as my major.

Actually as far as the psychology aspect goes i would think it mainly applies to the selection of new astronaut canidates not nessecarily to the ones that are already astronauts although im sure they do get some testing too.

Your right the dream really does never die. And astronauts come from a wide cariety of backgrounds and in the future that will porobably be even more true. Now you can also include teachers to that list. I forget which member of the 107 crew it was but they applied 4 times before being accepted to the astronaut office. And once your selected you still need to have patience and endurance because even after your selected it will be atleast 3 and a half years or so before you will get to fly and thats if your lucky. Thats accounting for the 2 years of basic astronaut training and atleast a year and a half or so of mission specific training. And thats an extremely optimistic estimate of the time between selection and flight. I met Alvin Drew last year he had just finished basic astronaut training and estimated it would be 2005-2006 before he'll get to fly. He said their are still people from the astronaut class of 98 waiting to fly. Thats for the MS position which they probably have more of than any other type of stronaut pilot waits might be a little shorter and a ps is a whole nother category ofcourse. So get a good education and be persistant and stick to your dreams.

I fully plan on going up someday!!! And they do alot of testing on the astronauts but a very large part of the psychology in the space program is in the things they take up with them. In a sense the female makeup cases arnt a need but they encourage you to take them if you wear makeup to keep your routine. Just little things that can keep your day somewhat the same considering your world will be turned upside down when you get up there.
I too am going to be a Psychologist.

I'd never heard they looked at what you took with you but it makes sense.

As fars as the Air Force Academy goes most astronauts who are military pilots or even non pilot astronauts who are military dont leave the military first. They are still ussually part of the military i',m not sure what they would be classified as though most likely some kind of detached duty. So you dont have to completely leave the military to become an astronaut.

My dream has always been to go into space. Actually, my dream was always to build my own space ship and go to mars. But anyway, this year I'll be going to UAH to major in aerospace engineering. I hope to get a PhD eventually. I would love to work for NASA but in reality I'll probably end up working for one of their contracters like Martin Marietta or Thiokol or someone.
