Astronaut Wings: new order!

Post by SpaceCanada »

Several people here have asked me to make astronaut wings over the years. Unfortunately, I couldn't make them at the time or now don't have any more blanks. However, the company I used to make the originals has sent me a quote to make another batch. How many people are interested, and how many would you like to order?

The quote is:
25-49 patches = $6.20 CAD each
50-99 patches = $3.80 CAD each

Blue name badge with matte silver or matte gold thread, just like real NASA wings.

Plus, I can add Velcro for $1 each. Shipping would be at cost, which is around $2 CAD worldwide. I am not going to make any money off this. I would purely be a facilitator.

If we can get enough to make the minimum order I can make it happen.

Last call!! We need our more patches to make the order. I'm hoping to place the order on Tuesday. I messaged a bunch of people who asked about them over the past two years. Check your inboxes.

Hm, do you have a picture of the patch as a sample?
I am not sure if I need some. I always ordering here: https://www.nametags4u.com/
I always told them to put the original NASA Astronaut wings on the patch and they did it, so I am fine :-)

Are the patches you want to order the same?

They look like this, with gold or silver embroidery:

I placed the order earlier this week; no more names can be added. I have contacted everyone who requested name plates in the past and everyone who made the list should know about it by now.

They look great. I already have mine. As I said, I always order them at this shop: https://www.nametags4u.com/
You just have to tell them that you want to have the Astronaut Wings (they are not available in the online desgin program).
So I did it alway that way: choose my design online with "NASA Wings" and after purchase I sent an E-Mail to tell them, what I really want to order, I always sent a picture as a sample. Never had any problems.
They have other great stuff, like bags and shirts. I can recommend this shop.

I had no idea that company made them; I'll be sure to tell people about that option after this run is complete if anyone else wants one.
I had some made by Jennifer in the first run; and they look perfect.

Just an FYI, SC hall of famer Hoot Gibson was the one who designed these wings. Hoot told me that when NASA got away from the leather nametags and the non-military astronauts came around, there had to be a wing design for non-pilot astronauts. John Young told the astronauts to submit a design for it, and everyone had an idea and nobody would back down. Hoot took control, sketched a generic wing and put the astronaut pin design into the middle of it. Young OK'd it, and that was that.
Note the wings themselves look way more like the Navy style than the USAF style (the idea of an Army pilot wing profile was an alien concept back then), as Hoot and Young of course were both Navy men.

Good to know about the other company that makes them.

The order I placed just went into production today, so they should be ready soon.

I've heard the same story from Hoot. I asked him a question about the name tags back in 2007 and why some astronauts were different than others -- and what the civilian name tag meant. Interesting story, and not one I've been able to find elsewhere.

Everyone should have received either an email or private message from me regarding their patches. I sent you photos, along with pricing and questions about Velcro and shipping addresses. Please respond promptly. Those who respond first get their patches shipped first. :D
