Came across this Alabama Space And Rocket Center Patch on eBay.
Just posting this link out there to see what's everyone's thoughts on this area and if anyone has seen a 'white' variant such as this? I've only seen the red patches on the flight suits in books and photos?

That's pretty great! I don't think I've ever seen a white version, just the red.

I have one in my collection and saw another on ePay a couple of years ago.Vincent wrote:That's pretty great! I don't think I've ever seen a white version, just the red.
I tried to figure out what they were for and I haven’t found any record of them being used in white.
The original red/white/gold design was intended to match the original planned NASA patches for the flight suits.
The original concept when NASA thought they’d launch every few weeks was there wouldn’t be mission patches anymore. Astronauts would just put a tab under the triangle shuttle program patch for the mission they flew. They even made the tabs for all the NASA centers, programs and hardware. I have several in my collection.
The early SC patches were made to be exactly like those.

Yeah, we all know about the red patches and why they exist. Blachwk has encountered an extremely rare variant and was inquiring about that. My guess is they just needed a white one to put on white "spacesuits" or something at the museum where the red patches didn't quite work as well.

I don’t think that’s a fair assumption at all. Sure, a FEW of us here know that, but I highly doubt everyone here does.Hotdog wrote:Yeah, we all know about the red patches and why they exist.
As for the white ones, I spent a lot of time looking into their use when I found mine, and nothing came up. I’ve seen plenty of photos of the EVA suits from camp in the timeframe the red/white/gold patches were being worn (and afterward) and have never turned up any photos of a white one of these being worn.
