You know something. If i remember right this was the first topic ever posted to the hab forum. Its hard to believe that was going on 2 years ago now. Boy we have come along way since then. I remember when it was just a few people making post every few weeks at most. Now look at this place.

From A Counselor Perspective...

Post by VansinSpace »

Okay, the PDA rule. Always an issue! After being a counselor, I feel bad for breaking the rule when I did. You have to realize that we are given a very thorough training about working with children/young adults and physical contact is a huge and serious topic. So part of the no tolerance on PDAs is to protect us from potentially bad situations.
Now, in terms of PDA amongst the campers. PDA is one of the those things that you have to either ban or accept. It is too hard to set guidelines for because a physical action between "just friends" and something more mean very different things. And each counselor will interpret it in their own way. To keep the camp environment comfortable for everyone who pays to go, we have to have a standard policy across the board.
And finally, your parents trust that we will provide a structured and disciplined environment and letting your hormones get the best of you does not fall into that category. So if you think someone is cute at camp, make sure their state isn't too far away and meet up later. Your counselor will love you for it! (we do hate having to be the mean police, but it's our job that is on the line)

Well it makes sense to have the rule especially in the age groups you deao with at camp. And although their were some cute girls on 3 of my 4 teams over the years i cant imagine becoming romantic with them because we were too close of friends.

I am sure that the PDA rule also helps to foster friendships...not impossible romances. I know love is great and all, but for the week at space camp its nice to meet everyone and grow really close...like family or best friends. Relationships can make that really ackward. Others dont know how to deal with a new relationship, when the couple isnt coufortable with eachother and are just discovering the relationship. It really helps us to become closer in the long run, I think.
I have been to space camp four times and i hope to go to adult camp when i am over 21.

I agree Space Camp is great for making friends and maybe down the road that may even lead to something but at camp I think it should stay on a friendly more professional level.

PDA rules aren't at all enforced among the older age groups. A little fun rough-housing here and there is tolerated (even to the counselors themselves, in good fun. I'm looking at you, Baywatch.). Some counselors even look the other way at some camp romance.
