Forget those wimpy air-powered rockets, we need to make these at camp: Water powered rockets with drop-away boosters

Awesome design! I think I considered making a model rocket like this once, but I didn't want to have to deal with a wildly tumbling rocket and/or explosion. I wonder what kind of pressure launch rig you could use...

I wouldn't trust many people to use a modified air compressor launcer for something like that. It would be cool though.

Our air compressor fills bike tyres and soccer balls (as well as pneumatic tools and such); it wouldn't be difficult to set the PSI gauge to cut off at a certain pressure, hook up the hose, and watch 'em fly. You could get a more consistent air pressure with a compressor than a bike pump, that's for sure.
Now I have an itch to make a bottle rocket. I wonder if the rocket ban in my town applies to bottle rockets too, or just the combustible type. I should call and find out. Hmmm... a project for the lake?

The museum where i use to work just used a small air compressor. The type they sell to cary in your car to pump up tires nothing big or fancy. Works faster than a hand bycycle pump. i have never tried one with boosters but have done a few creative things with parachute systems to keep it from just crashing back to the ground.

Back at Adult 8-day in 2004 we had 'Recovery Systems' on our schedule. None of us knew it would involve water bottle rockets - but we were happy it did. We had a very short presentation about recovery systems, a budget, a supply store, and a score sheet. We were all graded on how well our design fared for the materials and design we used. Fun times.

The Space & Rocket Center keeps one handy to make sure the Atlas in Rocket Park is inflated. When the temperature changes, the skin on the Atlas is so thin it will collapse if it's not pressurized.
