Alumni Academy 2008

Post by airkale »

I'm just getting back in after graduation today, I hope everyone made it home safely. Another great weekend in Huntsville. I thought that it would be appropriate to start a thread so that the hab1-ers that attended this weekend could share thier experiences.

Hopefully, many folks signed on to see Vincent's induction last night via the internet. Those not in attendance missed a truly special occasion.

That's all for tonight, work tommorrow.

Well i got in last night abiut 10:30 exhausted then had to work all dya today so haven't had a chance to write anything up or dopwnload the 300+ pictures i took this weekend yet but i promise both will be done soon. A write up probably this week and hopefuly atleast some of the pictures as well.

It was a great weekend seeing old friends and making new ones as well. We have some alumni planning to join hab 1 as well. As Kale said if you missed the hall of fame event even via the internet you realy missed something special this year. Not only because 2 hab 1 people were inducted but it was a great event overall.

More to come.

I can't wait to see/read all about your weekend. If I start saving now maybe I can make it down there next year.

Well crap I was writing a reply and I deleted it! Ok so here is the repeat!

So I managed to survive the first day back at work, so I'm taking a little time to recap the weekend. This year as always the Alumni Academy was a wonderful experience. I was so excited about getting to see my good friends Jason, Vincent, Chris, Mike, and Jeramy again. More over as soon as we all said hello's it was back to all the fun times that we had last year, just like we had seen each other yesterday and not a year ago. Overall, I was so glad that I returned even despite the high price it took to return.

Day One: We all arrived around noon and started checking in. Hab1 was business as usual, with kids running around and doors slamming over head. After, briefly catching up with all my new and old friends, we all went to the cafeteria for lunch with Story Musgrave. To say the least the speach was "interesting" in about a million ways. Anyone that knows a little about Story will understand, but other than his slight eccentricities, it was neat to hear his story and point of view. After lunch we milled around the center, took group photos, and compared the picture of how things at the center were last year in our minds with all the new changes we saw. Next on the schedule was our introduction to the new Davidson center. As we walked to the beautifully landscaped building I couldn't help but be impressed with how well the new facility was done. The new building was really magnificent, and talk about massive! As we walked inside, we stood in line to enter the theatre to see the new 3d movies that play there. It was at this time that the first milestone occurred in the weekend: Jeramy bought the new team mascot, the infamous Space Camp Barbie (new and improved)! So at that time, team Columbia's roster was complete. So moving on, we saw the 3-d movie. After the movie was finished we walked out of the theatre and as soon as you exited through the double doors, you were floored by the massive expanse of the main hall and a perfect condition Saturn V S-1C stage. The place was so awe inspiring one of my new friends Melissa had to come grab me because I was wondering around aimlessly while Jeramy was trying to tell us when to meet her next. So we looked around for a short while and then we were all off back to the Hab to change into proper clothes for the Apollo Saturn reunion being held that night. When we returned, we were again greeted by a Saturn V and BBQ that we had already eaten for lunch. That night we ate with the company of many people that worked on the actual Apollo program, and while the ceremonies were not Earth shattering, it was a unique dinner. After all, I was eating with my good new and old friends, making jokes/having a great time, and still gawking at all the artifacts as well as the rocket whose S-IVB stage was suspended in the air about 20 foot about the table we were eating at. Lastly, after all the ceremonies were over we returned to the Hab to plan our "End of the Day's Activities". Wink Wink. Needless to say a good time was passed... Did I mention how awesome the Davidson center was and how much fun I was having???

Day Two: Well after a short sleep we all managed to get up, shower, and return to the cafeteria for the best tasting meal of the day; breakfast. Next up was the Omnimax movie "Fighter Pilot", and then to start training for our missions aboard Enterprise. The orbiter sim was particularly special for me because every since the first time I was at the USSRC i wanted to have a mission in Enterprise as it is a full mock-up. Now I actually had the chance to play around pretty much all I wanted in it and all the other sims. Better yet I was a mission specialist and got to play with all the toys in the payload bay! Most of the day was taken up with the two missions even though they were actually only about an hour long. And even though most of us were really craving a super complex EDM, all of the team was having so much fun being together we really didn't care. After the missions were complete we once again donned our dinner attire for the Hall of Fame dinner held that night. I was particularly excited to have the preveledge of having my friend Vincent being inducted into the hall of fame. I was very happy to honor him that night with congratulations, as he and the Hab1 site were so very influential in getting me back to Huntsville after 10 years, as well as since he was a good friend and an all around stand up fellow. :-) On top of that, the dinner itself and the keynote speakers were very entertaining. Most importantly the new inductees were all very deserving of the award and it was neat getting to hear their truly incredible stories and insights. All in all it was a memorable night that I'll look back on for a long time.

Day Three:

The last morning in Hunstville was short and sweet it seemed. Most of the morning included the team goofing around playing Space bowl or riding the training sims. Additionally, we saw my favorite omnimax film "The Dream is Alive" which is always makes me happy since it always brings back memories Space Dome full of campers joking around at night as we waited for the movie to start. And even though the morning wasn't particularly excited, I felt fulfilled since I made sure to take full advantage of the free reign that the alum had over the place. Of course another few days would have been great, since it always seems like you can never make enough time in Huntsville. Unfortunately, the time came to "be graduated" and not only did we have to "get graduated" but we had to sit in the cramped Challenger Auditorium to do it. So, the end came quick and we all had to say good byes, but I wasn't to sad because ole Hab1 is a pretty good substitute to actually being there.

Are you done yet???:

Ok this is getting a little long and personally the word BLOG is worse to me than the F-word. But in my defense, every time I get a chance to go back to Huntsville I always have a great time and it the fun always seems to get better. I think it has a lot to do with the collections of friends that I have amassed there and the fact that the USSRC seems to always be adding great things to their arsenal. I was so surprised to return and see the new Davidson building was way over what my expectations were, even after I had seen it being built. It made me proud that the new building was above and beyond what could have been done in the name of the budget. So hopefully, all my Columbia buddies will post up some cool stuff in the next few days, and for those "Alumni Camp-Alumni" I hope you can share in the fun we all had this weekend by reading our posts.

So enough with all this pansy talk, thanks to all my Alumni buddies!

Well i finaly have time to write up this incredible weekend. Though Kale said alot about it i have some extra bits and pieces to add.

I actualy arrived on wednesday so i could have some time to enjoy the museum without the hussle and bussle of camp and to see friends. I flew into huntsville as usual and was met at the airport by Rodney from the space and rocket center who i realy arpecoate getting the ride from and thanks to Andrew here on hab 1 for arranging it for me. As soon as i got to the marriott i left my bag in my room and went to the new davidson center. My first impression was wow that new entrance is alot further than the old one from the marriott. But as soon as my arms had stopped hurting and i had gone inside i was wowed. The new center is incredible and the restoration job was beautifuly done. And withing 10 minutes of arival i had run into two of my old friends from working their last year. And on my way dpown to the exit to head over to the main museum i ran into someone else i knew who i am embarrassed to say i still don't remember exactly who she was but she remembered me by name. I hate it when that happens. I headed over to the main museum where i ran into more friends from last year and saw the changes that had been made. It was great to see all my old friends again but it felt strange to be back and now an outsider in many ways having been gone almost a year. I akso stopped by camper services and found a much better organised office than last year when i put in many hours there.

Wednesday night deserves a paragraph of its own. Thanks to a friend of mine who use to be a bus driver for the center i had a dinner with a very special group of people. This included Jackie the friend mentioned above, her husband a member of the original Von Braun rocket team Konrad Dancdenberg, the widow of the recently deceased Ernst Stuelengher, atleast one other gentleman whpo worked with Von Braun and several other widows as well. To hear the stories was incredible and i will try to get the complete list later. To be invited to dine with all of these people was a huge honor and i wish everyone could have attended.

Thursday dawned bright and early and it was back to the space and rocket center. This time taking tons of photos of the new center as well as the main museum and rocket park. Also bought a few souvenirs and ran into more friends. I also had lunch with Andrew from Hab 1 which it was great to meet him and share my camp experiences we also had dinner that night at the marriott.

Friday Kale pretty much covered in his post. The apollo saturn reunion was intresting to attend that bnight as well though not as impressive as the hall of fame saturday night. But the one great prt was we were finaly together as a team. And we had a great team. Made up of some of us who were just alumni returning some after many years. We also had several staff members who are camp alumni. We had a fantastic group. I especially got to know and hang out with Kale, Mellissa, Tim, Patrick, Chuck, and George. And ofcourse the night was topped off after the apollo saturn reunion with an ATO at the marriott. And we had a little exploration through the training center as well.

Saturday was mainly consisted of mission training and missions. But we had a great time. Though the missions were still only 1 hour we had them aboard Enterprise this year anomolies and all which made it a bit more exciting. Jeramy even got flight suits for everyone to wear for those who didnt have one and we got some good team shots with them on. The missions were essentialy the same AOA missions done by ASA teams. Though i would like to see longer missions for alumn i camps in the future these were still an improvement over the ones last year. That night we had the hall of fame.

The hall of fame was something very special. Again it was under the Saturn V in the new davidson center. Besides Vincent's induction Josh Whitfield who is a fellow hab 1 person as well was inducted and was awarded his second purple heart medal and combat action badge for action in Iraq. Along with our two hab 1 people a teacher who has brough thousands to space camp, the man who designed many of the simulators we know and love and who is also one of the original von braun team members, and 2 current NASA employees who were former campers were inducted. The ceremony seemed a bit long but was a great night. Followed by another ATO.

Sunday morning came way too fast. And it was time to pack for home. We did do the sims in the astrotrek building and do space bowl that morning. We were also given a big send off at graduation with Jeramy reading all of the years we had each attended camp to some wows and ahs from the parent child graduates. We had lunch at the marriott atleast those of us who could. Chuck, George and I headed fror the airport about the same time and stopped and had a drink together before i had to catch my plane home. Just like every space camp trip leaving was the hardest part. Saying goodbye to so many friends was tough. And it seemed strange to leave after only 5 days after living their 3 months last summer.

I realy hope i can retuen next year for the a;umni camp but next year will probably be tough to do so but i will return the year after for sure if i cant next year. I would like to recomend though thast if they do this camp on the reunuon weekend again they need another day added to the camp. Because of the reunions at night alot of camp time was cut out to make room for it. An other full day is needed in their. Longer missions would still be good though the 1 hour Enterprise missions were definately an improvement. Space Camp thanks for another great year and look for pictures to come soon.

I sure hope someone gets on here and posts the pics, because I don't take pictures myself.

Ohh and how could I forget, we had lunch with our good buddy Hoot Gibson who was particularly glad to see our team mascot!

Additionally, as a first hand report, there is some steady progress on Pathfinder. The nose pan has been re-attached, and the front of the orbiter up to the payload bay bulkhead has been re-painted. Very Nice!

Thanks for the great summaries Kale and Boomerang! Sounds like a great time. That master-scientist-engineer dinner sounds amazing, Boomerang. Wow!

Let me know when the Flickr page is up as I don't have Facebook or MySpace... although I wish I did just to see the photos...

Hey Sarah,

No unfortunatly the time we had scheduled with Hoot was moved and by the time we got together with him it was all sorta hurried.

It was kinda funny, though, we had Hoot Saturday during the day and he showed the same slide show as last year. Then later at the Hall of Fame dinner he showed it again. We got a good laugh out of that.

I wish we had a little more time than we did to hang out with Hoot like last year. After reading Mulane's book and all of Hoot antics the conversations could have been interesting...

Total bummer! I remember last year Mike and I asking him about how to drink a "flaming hooker". That was classic!

I have a Platinum ticket to the autograph show here at KSC in November (You have no idea how excited I am). Hopefully I'll get to hang out with him and meet a few others. He's always been so nice and friendly.

Funny you mentioned the flaming hooker, Mike hooked up with us again this year for After the Day Activities and that came up in conversation...

Be sure to post some stuff about the KCS show after the fact!
