MOCR positions
Ok maybe i'm just bored but i was wondering what positions in MOCR diffrent people have chosen or been stuck with in some cases over the years how did you like them? and why? For those newbies who may not knoe MOCR is the Mission Operations Control Room known to most people as Mission Control.
Well my first year i went getting stuck in mission control was one of my biggest worries since in those days space camp only did one shuttle mission so what you got was what you got. Thankfully i ended up as pilot so it wasnt a problem.
My second year for one mission i was Commander so i was happy but the other i was stuck iin MOCR at the SSO or Spacecraft Systems Officer not the most exciting position i think i flipped 5 switches, got a fuel status report from the commander and read the crew a message from the president all that in a 2 hour mission needless to say it was pretty boring. Ofcourse i also had to monitor shuttle systems but nothing ever came up that i had to deal with but this was academy not ASA. But the Discovery Mocr was actually pretty cool back then it was one of only 3 that were not right next to their orbiter but were in a seperate room away from the TCF.
Third year was at AC so no problem there.
Fourth year i was at the Flight Directors console for one of the short practice missions. That was the ony time i really liked MOCR being the guy in charge. I was glad i wasnt there for the EDM but if i'd had to be there it wouldnt have been too bad atleast.

I know you asked for MOCR, but I might as well add orbiter positions.
Space Camp 2004
Commander: hit switches, follow stupid script
Flight Director: no point in the CAMP missions
Capcom: no fun when everyone can technically talk to the orbiter
Space Academy 2005
Station Commander: danced around station after having nothing to do
Capcom: more fun, keeps you on your toes
Payload Specialist: I was so bored I don't even remember what I did =/
Space Academy (8 day) 2006 (what I just came back from a few hours ago)
Flight Director: alright, I guess
Pilot: fun with the checklists
Station Commander: we AOAed on 2 engines, didn't tell us, so we were doing our jobs when no one was paying attention. so I guess it's alright =P
POD: STS-121 launched during our mission, so at T-0; we aborted with a SSME failure. Then, we went on discovery and followed the little kid program. So then, I was INCO. Talked a lot.
Pilot (6 hour) SO MUCH FUN IT ISN'T EVEN FUNNY. I got Right Stuff, one of the reasons I got it was this position. I ate Mac & Cheese, did checklists, communicated, and read the checklists to the commander at the same time YAY MULTITASKING!
-hyper-
well, I hope that helped a little bit
oh, and on the 6 hour, MOCR is fun. I could hear them 'dying' in the background in CAPCOM'S microphone, however, it didn't help when CAPCOM was the person getting sick when we had 7 anomalies =/

I was PROP in Mission Control (I had written that position down as one I'd prefer, and got it). Mission Control wasn't my most shining Space Academy moment...I kept losing where we were in the script, and the others just skipped over my parts when I didn't read them! The guy who was our PAO had a GREAT voice, though; definitely a plus for someone who reads long parts out loud throughout the mission!
For our other mission, I was Commander on the shuttle...I was a little nervous, but we did all right...well, unless you care that the nose cap and payload bay doors on the shuttle might never be the same!

guess ill just list all my jobs:
2003:
CapCom: Best job ever. i loved it. being the only one to talk with the orbiter made gave u a big job and u ended up communicating with everyone. also script wasn't a huge part of your job not counting beginning and ending checklists.
Mission Specialist: Other favorite job. EVAs are awsome. i did the one wear u attach rods and these balls with alot of holes in them together...but u dont have the blueprints so u need to be talking with someone from mc at all times.
2004:
same two jobs lol. i loved them so much i decided not to try anything new.
my MS job was building a pyramid. one person was in the crane while the other 2 were in the five degrees of freedom chairs
2005:
FlightDirector: Didnt really like this job. not much fun. spent most of the time taking pictures and laughing at the people on the orbitor from the tv screens with people.
Mission Scientist: Moderatley amusing. i made colorless goo and did the checkups with the MS's.

I went to camp a few weeks ago and I was commander on the first mission, and mission scientist on the second. Commander was MUCH better. The second mission was bad because the cargobay doors were open on re-entry and landing. THe commander was OK. BUt we had bad teamwork on both missions. I was mission scientist, and it STUNK! I had 3 lines and all I did was watch the battery on the station.

I have been many positions, and I cannot remember them all right now, but they do include:
Peter Pan on the orbiter.
Payload Specialist on the orbiter (back when there was a PS track)
Prop (MOCR)
EVA (MOCR)
Some fun positions on the ISS where I got to do experiments and checklists and stuff...
Last time I was Peter Pan for two of our four 1-hour missions, and then I did all the MS spots in MOCR. For the 24-hour EDM I was in MOCR doing EVA and PAO, which was awesome! (I would still prefer to go on EVAs as the space crew, but I won't complain about MOCR because it rocked!)
Do they even use the Candarm on the Enterprise for missions any more? We used it in 1998 and 1999 but not in 2004.

You didn't use it in 2004 because they changed the EVA's for the 8 day camps. It's still in use.

For Beta Mission I was Mission Scientist... it was fun but only because we made it so... We ended up getting our ipods and putting the headphones up to the mikes and the guys in the station had a rave party with EVIL WILSON 3,000 and WILSON JNR!!!

I was in SS MOCR for part of our 24-hour mission at adult 8-day. Everyone was in the shuttle MOCR but I had to go to SS MOCR by myself to talk to the EVA people. I liked being in SS MOCR. Then again, I like everything at camp. While being in MOCR may not be as 'exciting' as being on the orbiter or space station, it's still incredibly fun and we all had a great time.
