Ok I might go in 2006..
Hello I am new here, I just turned 17 but I'm not sure if I should go to Advanced Acadamy or the one for Adults. What is the diffrence? How do I get the Orange Suits? What is the price and I remember reading something about if you go you'd have to take a plane to go somwhere else like in florida or something what is up with that? I'm from Richmond, Virginia

You'd defentally want to go to ASA...you'll be with kids your own age...I don't think you could go to the adult one, you're too young...
The orange suits are worn during the EDM (6 hr mission) if you're assigned in the orbiter. And no, you don't fly to florida...the most traveling you'll prob do while at camp is to aviation challenge and back (short walk or bus ride)...
i couldn't tell you the diffrence b/w the Adult and ASA...i'm still too young (17) to go to adult...you can find discriptions of the programs and the prices at spacecamp.com
Have fun at camp and I hope this helps

I never did ASA but did Adult Space Academy (but the 3 day one). I liked the adult one. You get to go out at night, lol. Um.... I never did ASA, I wanted to but my parents would only pay for one week at a time and I always went to AC. But it's definitely fun to go as an adult too. I went back in September, was 19 at the time and the youngest in my group. So do you wanna be older or younger than people? No. Both are great I'm sure. Hope you end up going. Oh yeah.. and you would only have to fly into Huntsville, and they will pick you up and everything .

lol depends if we work with the other gender or not and how good lookin they are..
Sounds really interesting from what I've read and seen. So when you arrive they hand you your suits at registration and stuff or do u have to buy it (from the girft shop?) seperatly? I'll probobally go to ASA now and adult one later on just to do both. I can't swim I read u get to go scuba diving do u have to know how to swim already or what lol. Is it clean cause I read somewhere that the computers area real outdated and I saw the bunks on this site I'm like 6'8 I hope i can fit on it
I'm trying to read stuff posted here but most of it is out of date
oh yeah my last question, It isen't real cheesy is it? I herd it was but I hope not. I saw the rockets sticking out the ground like some Disney World attraction

Well it is camp, it's somewhat cheesy sometimes. Um, you won't be fitting well on the bunk. As and adult I know some people stayed at the Mariott instead of the bunks, but you can't do that in ASA. Um, I think you have to be able to swim to scuba... but maybe that's just my common sense. They won't be teaching you to swim. I like the Rocket Park.. the USSRC is a museum after all so everything is up for display. Do you like space? If so you will probably like camp... otherwise don't spend all the money.

If you can't swim you can take the pilot track and you'll go over to aviation challenge and fly the sims over there while the scuba ppl dive...i've don't both and visiting ac was fun...It's not cheesy...you just have to get into it...not too hard if you order a suit you get it most of the time on the first day. sometime before your first mission you're whole team will go and borrow suits for the rest of your camp time.
This camp has created some of the best memories for me AND has shown me what I want to for my future career...plus i've made some awesome friends from all over

Okay... the summary...
1. At your age you can only go to Advanced Space Academy (for youth). You must be 19 years old to attend the adult programmes. Most people at ASA are around 17 years old, so they will be your age and grade level. Adult camps are much the same as youth camps except your teammates are (older) adults and you have a bit more freedom. The programme is essentially the same, with a few differences here and there.
2. You do not need to know how to "swim" in order to SCUBA dive. However, if you are fearful of the water in any way (i.e. the deep end, putting your head under, etc.) you may want to skip the whole SCUBA thing. You can still be a Mission Specialist and not do SCUBA - the counsellors will arrange for you to do something else or you can be the much appreciated photographer who takes pictures of everyone while they are SCUBA diving. Basically, if you can go to public swim with friends and have a good time, kick your legs, put your face under water, and blow bubbles in the deep end without freaking out, you can SCUBA. No "official" swim skills are required. It never hurts to try.
3. Beds in Habitat I are singles, which means they are just shy of 6 feet long. However, if you are in a room with a spare bed, you can claim the top bunk at the back, where two beds meet in an 'L' shape, which should be long enough for you. You may need to fill in the gap between mattresses with an extra blanket or pillow. (You may be able to request this somehow by phoning the office before you go.)
4. The stuff at Space Camp has been upgraded in the past few years. That means new computers, new software, and more realism. Space Camp is as real as you want it to be. If you go there expecting a cheesy summer camp, that is what you will get. If you go there with an open mind, curiosity, an interest in human spaceflight, and anticipation of a fun time, you will definitely enjoy it. And, if at all possible, sign up for the 13-day programme while you are still a youth, as they do not offer it for adults.
5. When you arrive you are given your name tag and a t-shirt. You will get a blue flight suit to borrow for the week - and yes, they do come in super tall sizes. (If they can fit Lurch at AC, a super-tall counsellor, they should fit you.) If you want to bring a blue flight suit home, you can buy one from the gift shop.
6. The rockets you see are life-sized, and rather admirable. You will be given some time in Rocket Park to read about all the rockets, their purpose, and significance. Many of the rockets are even real, especially the Saturn V lying on its sde. Quite the sight to see - these rockets are massive!
7. The only way you would be flying to Florida would be if you were at AC in a simulator. Otherwise, the Educator programme has some events in Florida, but you don't qualify for that unless you are a certified educator.
Well, that should answer all your questions about the camp itself. If you have any interest in human spaceflight, science, or engineering, you should have a fabulous time at Space Camp. If you have any more questions, please post them here.

-- He actually had to cut the legs off another flight suit and add the material to his so he could cover his legs. Capris really aren't Lurchs' thing.

You can only buy the royal blue flight suits from Space Camp and the olive green ones from Aviation Challenge. The orange ones are not for sale. Flight suits come with various patches affixed to them. I believe the blue ones come with a NASA logo patch, a Shuttle patch, a US Space Camp patch, a US flag patch, a US Space and Rocket Center patch, and a velcro spot for a name badge. The olive green ones come with one or two patches, although I forget which ones are standard. I think you get an Aviation Challenge patch and a velcro strip for a name badge.
As for price, they are $75 for the flight suit itself and $5 for a custom name badge. Flight suits make a great souvenir, provided you would wear it again someday. I wear mine at science camps, Brownie/Girl Guide science days, Hallowe'en, and I sometimes lend it out to friends. Oh, and I wore it many times at Space Camp, even though they leant me another one to wear.

If you don't like the royal blue flight suits i believe the gift shop still had a few of the light blue ones left when i was there his summer though the selection may not be a big one size wise.
