12 Day ASA

Post by rycho626 »

I'm thinking about doing ASA 12 Day next year (for it will most likely be my last year at camp!!!) but I'd like some information on it and how its diferent from the 6/5 day. Is it just two weeks with diferent people each week, or are you with the same people for the two weeks. Or i should probably word it; Is it one continuous session or two separate ones? Anything else diferent and whether one is better than the other? Anyway you can think of a 14/15 year old to pay?

Even though I have not been to the 12-day session, I can give you some information that I know:

- You will be with the same people for the entire two-week session.
- You will have a longer and more involved mission. (24h+ vs. 6h)
- All participants get to SCUBA, pending medical issues.
- You will get to do more activities.

I do not think you will get much more information about the 12-day camp because its activities are rather classified. If you have any more questions, post them here and someone will try to answer them.

As for whether it would be worth it or not, I am certain it would be. If possible, you may want to do the 6-day camp before the 12-day one so you can get even more out of the ASA programme. (You could always do the 6-day and then the 12-day in a row, spending a total of three weeks at camp - how awesome would that be!)

Anyway, I am no expert, but best of luck planning your ASA experience!

If you have any questions pm me or im me. I can't give you a whole lot of detail, but I might be able to answer a few questions for you. Like SpaceCanada said a lot of the stuff we did is fairly "classified" if you will. It's understandable as to why though. They want every trainee to have the same experiences and not have advantages of knowing about things before hand. I'm so glad I didn't have any advance knowledge about stuff b/c it made everything that much more enjoyable.

I won't tell you much, but when they say it is a 24+ hour mission (or any other duration), you will be involved with that mission (in one way or another) for 24+ hours straight! Really! I cannot give you details, but it will be the most intense mission you will ever do at Space Camp, guaranteed!

OMG!!!!!!!!!!! i hate my life. i called today to make sure they got my scuba papers that i faxed yesterday, and the registration lady said, "you know you dont go scuba diving in academy!!!!!" i was all like im not in academy im in advanced and she was like how old are you and i said 17 and shes like, yeah you should be asa and plus i was signed up for next summer, which i didnt know, which is why i thought the dates were the 16-28, which was 1 day off. wow. they must have thought i was the biggest moron to send scuba forms for academy. well no camp till xmas. this kinda sucks. i thought it was too good to be true that spots were availible one week before the 12 day asa session.

In 1998 I just turned 15, and then in 1999 I was 16... and I seemed to fit in just fine both years. Most of my teamates were 16 or 17. If you go there with a good attitude, enthusiasm, and enjoy everything (including the classroom lessons), you will have an excellent time!

When I first started going to ASA I was barely 15....I found that most people were 16 or 17 but thats okay. With 8day ASA, I noticed that most people were upperclassmen in hs. Its okay though because for all intents and purposes you will be treated the same by the older kids.

We actually had a 14 year old on our team. For the most part though our team was 17 or younger. Overall we had a fairly good variety though.

In the same fasion as everybody else i attended ASA for the first time at age 15. There are usually at least a few 15/16 year olds on the teams.

I would also do the 6-day programme first before taking on the 12-day programme. It will give you the general information from ASA so that you can attend the alumni 12-day programme and learn even more.

(I know it helped me a lot to go to the 6-day programme before attending the 8-day one.)

ok thanks for all u guys' help.
What about the Faking Your Age factor? I want my friend from this academy year to come with me to camp be of course he's still one year too young. i hear kids do it all the time and some even fake to be younger. I think ive decided to do Advanced Academy one week and Mach III one week also just because i need to see was AC is like.

If you have been to academy a few times I think they allow you to go to advanced. When I went to the 8 day we had a kid who was only 14 on our team.
