Permanent Temporary Employees
So, every ten months, everyone related to space camp is laid off. This is to ensure that we all remain temporary part-time employees, and don't have to get paid overtime or given benefits.
Not only does this include all the counselors, the managers and supervisors, but it also includes the bus drivers! Sofa's been here 10 years, and he's still a temporary part-time employee!
It seems like I've found the reason that the counselors have such a high turn-over rate. It's because there's no job security.
For those of you who know [a counselor], [the counselor] had to have [something] in by Sunday night and then was laid off last year on a Monday, hired back on a Wednesday, had to be in on Thursday to finish [the thing] for Friday.
It's no wonder that people don't stay here long as a counselor (unless of course, they're lifers... or this isn't their main job).
Maybe if they offered benefits, they might be able to keep more counselors.

For those that stay all year that really sucks yes, but 80% of the counselor staff will be gone by September. The high turn over rate is due to the fact that the counselor position is designed to take advantage of the summer for college students looking to work every hour they can on their break then move on, not as a permanent position.
If you choose to stay, there are many opportunities to move up into full time positions, in the Museum, Camp Operations, Education and in Marketing.
Also, many college students (the target market for counselor staff) are still covered under their parents health insurance plans until they are 23/24 years old.

sorry about the name, i didn't think about it before i wrote it, and once i wrote it, i wasn't sure how to edit it (if that's even possible except by moderator).
but i wrote it here, because when I came here as a camper, I wondered about it, and now that I'm here as a counselor, I know.
At any rate, there are a number of people who wish to work with the kids forever, don't want a bueracratic position, or want to be a manager/supervisor and still get laid off every ten months. the BUS DRIVERS get laid off every ten months...
it seems wrong to be able to work for a place as a temporary employee for ten months...

Othwerise, I believe this is a good topic to discuss also. Potential future counsellors like to know what they might be getting themselves into before they get there.
