They have an ice hotel (and yes, people stay in it!) somewhere too - in Denmark perhaps? We have ice sculptures around town in winter also, but no castles. The businesses downtown (if you can call it downtown here, but whatever) have a competition to see who has the best ice sculptures: polar bears, fairies, kids having snowball fights, eagles - you name it, someone has carved it!
If you ever want to see a truly spectacular winter festival, go to Ottawa/Laval and check out their carnivals on the Rideau Canal. They turn the canal into one really huge, really long ice skating rink. At any given time there are vendors selling treats, people skating to/from work, people making sculptures (including castles), and all kinds of activities. Mmmm.... beaver tails... mmmm.... (no, they aren't REAL beaver tails, just pastries made the size of beaver tails covered in flavoured toppings - yum!)
I have not been there in 13 years, but I am sure it is just as fun (and busy) as it ever was!
Oh, and how could I forget about Upper Canada Village near Ottawa. They make THE BEST maple syrup ever. You take the syrup, drizzle it on some snow, and then roll a popsicle stick on the snow to pick up the snow and syrup. Oh yum! Best traditional Canadian treat ever!

though the winter carnival is a huge deal. people come from the dakotas, wisconsin, canada, iowa plus the random people visiting from around the states and just happened to see it and be like what the whoop whoop? its loads of fun. they have sculpture contests, royalty from everywhere who give beads to volunteers. i have tons. it was fun to collect them. they had the stars on ice or whatever hockey turney it was that ended on my bday, may i add. lol. they have mini donuts. cant live without them here. and huge sledding hills. its awesome! i cant wait for it to happen again. though im gonna miss the palace.

the winter carnival is a saint paul thing. so it would have been there. lol, not like the difference matters to non-twin citiens. lol.SpaceCanada wrote:Yes... yes there was... Whether it was Minneapolis or not, i am unsure, but I do know there was an ice castle there.

Oh, lucky me - we got SNOW!!!
Not just stuff that melts as it falls either - full out white stuff, and a good 6 inches of it too!
The drive to work this morning was quite eventful though, something like one of those SUV advertisements on television - with the SUV dodging all the obstacles. Well, snow sculptures were on the boulevards, so I didn't have to go around them, but the very wet and heavy snow caused a lot of fallen trees. My crescent looks like a war zone! I feel sorry for the lads who wake up to find fallen trees on their houses and/or cars. (I saw a few of those this morning - ouch!)
It is nothing quite as bad as a hurricane though. I hope everything settles out with Ivan before more damage is done. I hear it is headed towards Alabama and Texas. Fingers crossed it doesn't reach Huntsville.

i have a weather story now too!!
ok so like last week i went to a movie with some friends and it was raining a little bit when we went in to the movie. So like the movie gets out i come of the theater and its POURING and it must have been raining really hard while we were in the theater because there were like puddles on the road that were half a foot deep. so i get into my car and start driving, and my little VW bug nearly died in puddles. it was fun though driving on the wrong side of the road to avoid them. i almost stopped at a gas station to ask if i could just park my car there and have my mom pick me up in one of our suv's. it was awsome. it took me an hour to get home.

Yes... snow... you read it right.
Thankfully the weather is warming up and most of the snow is melting. The clean up crew for my town has been working really hard to clear the fallen trees off roads and walks.
The weather looks great for the weekend, so hopefully everything will be back to "normal" soon. Until then, I like seeing all the snowmen the school kids made in the field behind my house.

The snow was not fun because at 2am the fire alarm went of in my tower at rez and we had to evacuate and stand in it for 30minutes. It was cold and we were all in our pj's and I had an 8am class the next day.
