Depends where you define space. There's no absolute place where the atmosphere ends. The X-Prize rules defines it as 100 kilometers, but any definition is mostly arbitrary.
I don't know the answer to that one, but I do know that today in 1997 (8 years ago already, if you can believe it) Pathfinder released Sojourner on the surface of Mars. The spacecraft landed on the red planet on July 4th.

One of our local news station screwed up on the moon landing. They said that the moon landing was 50 years ago. That would mean my dad was -4 years old when they landed.

1960 - The Soviet Union launched a Vostock spacecraft contaning tow dogs, Strelka and Belka, as well as a gray rabbit, rats, mice, flies, plants, fungi, microscopic water plants, and seeds. Soviet scientists were able to monitor the health of the dogs and the spacecraft landed safely the next day.
