I was so tired from camp that I slept through the first period of the game and went to bed the second the game was over.

That's a good point, the Cup may spend more time in Canada than in the US!meg wrote:yeah and not to mention the multitude of canadian players on tampa's team... *ahem!*Benji wrote:But, hey, at least a Canadian team got to the finals for the first time in like ten years, right?

Dave finally hoists the Cup!

The Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup became The Stanley Cup. This is that original Cup that is now in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Lord Frederick Arthur Stanley purchased the above Cup in the 1800s. "Considering the general interest which hockey matches now elicit, and the importance of having the game played fairly and under rules generally recognized, I am willing to give a cup which shall be held from year to year by the winning club." Yes, there is a reason it's called Lord Stanley's Cup.

Wow, do you work for the Lightning (Bolts) or something?
They have something buried in centre ice nearly everywhere it seems. Edmonton has the best ice on the continent, which is why we were asked to make and maintain the ice for the 2002 winter olympics. In the ice they buried a loonie and a toonie (or was it a dime?) under the red centre dot. What a kerfuffle that created after the two gold medal championships! But, alas, they exist in Edmonton, and they wanted Edmonton ice, so they got it, currency and all!

Blood
I saw the thrid both teams where out for blood and they got it. Even though Calgary lost it was a great game. I'm not much of a hockey fan but that is the best game I have seen.

17th Street Calgary (recently nicknamed "The Red Mile") was party-central during the playoffs. There were pictures of the crowds on the news, the newspapers, and the internet. It was fabulous!Benji wrote:Not the Calgary Ice Girls, I don't think they have those. Apparently the Red Mile goes nuts after Calgary wins... kinda like Mardi Gras, if you know what I mean...
Living in the same privince as Calgary, their celebrations often make the news here too. Their celebrations got so large that they had to recruit Edmonton police officers to come to Calgary and patrol their streets! They feared that if the Flames lost that there would be riots. Thankfully the fans, for the most part, took the loss well.
The Flames held a fan appreciation event earlier this week, thanking the fans for all their support. They have such a great spirit down there right now. Sure they are sad they lost the Cup, but they are on such a high for being the underdogs who made it so far.
Besides, if Calgary won the Cup, Edmonton would never live it down. The Oilers never even made it to the playoffs this year - sad. I hope the salary cap is implemented, then the Oilers won't have to lose their best players to so many teams. Just look at Tampa, they have 19 Canadians, many of whom are from Edmonton! The salary cap would force them to play for the love of the game, not just the ridiculous salaries.
PS - Benji, if the players do go on strike you may have the Cup for two years or more, wouldn't that be nice? Oh, and did you hear about the article in a Tampa newspaper that wrote Calgary had won the Cup; what a riot that would cause!

Yes, thankfully things didn't get too out of control on the Red Mile, but I read an article about one guy who got stabbed! I also read about the nickname "Pink Kilometer" after a gay-pride parade (don't know how true that one is). And yes, I have a copy of that editorial. They wrote two and the wrong one somehow got printed (but with the headline for if the Bolts won).
