Stanley Cup

Post by SpaceCanada »

Calgary Flames versus Tampa Bay Lightning; who will win; who to cheer for?

Living in the Edmonton area, we have been taught to despise Calgary (the other major city in Alberta). It's a huge rivalry in everything we do: Calgary versus Edmonton; the Battle of Alberta! Anyway... around here most people cheer for the Edmonton Oilers, anyone who plays AGAINST Calgary, and team Canada.

Now, since Edmonton didn't even make the Stanley Cup playoffs (yet alone the finals) what is one to do? Should one cheer for the only remaining Canadian team, thus showing patriotism; or shall one cheer for anyone playing agaist the Calgary Flames? It is quite the toss up around here, making for some rather interesting conversations.

There are Calgary Flames flags fying all over, Flames jerseys everywhere. Yet some people will spit at the sight of such memorabelia and proudly display the Tampa Bay logo.

Another strange thing is that there are 13 to 15 Canadian-raised players on the Calgary Flames and 15 to 17 Canadian-raised players playing for Tampa. So who is really the more Canadian team? Another question that creates interesting discussions. But then, Calgary is in the homeland of Hockey - Canada. Its fans are mostly Canadians, and the Stanley Cup would be on display here, which, would become National pride.

Ironically, Jerome Iginla, the captain of the Calgary Flames, was rised not too far from where I live. He is a hero, like Mark Messier, to young hockey players here.

The Calgary Flames shut out Tampa with a 3-0 win tonight. The series is 2-1 with Calgary in the lead.

Who am I cheering for? Well, good or bad, I'm cheering for Calgary. Why? Well, I am impartial to the whole Edmonton/Calgary rival just as I am neutral in the University/techincal school rivalry. My Dad was drafted to the Chicago Blackhawks, although he never signed a contract. For all I know, I could have been born there cheering for Chicago. So, I might as well cheer for the team closest to home. Call me a rebel if you wish...

Makes for quite the interesting discussion topic, eh? Or... maybe it is just me, living in the Edmonton area. But if anyone else has any comments, feel free to add them here:

Who are the Bolts, and what do they have to do with hockey? All my sources say Tampa Bay Lightning...

Got it. I thought it was a team from another type of sport, say, throw football, basketball, or college sports. Didn't realise Tampa Bay Lightning were nicknamed the Bolts. Got it... I'm still cheering for Calrgary though...

Game 7 broadcasting begins in 45 minutes. 'Hockey Night in Canada' on CBC; none of that glowing puck stuff.

What's with the glowing puck on American television anyway?

Who will it be? We shall find out soon enough. There will be parties either way!

Great Job Tampa. The team played well. Enjoy the Cup; you earned it!

A great pat on the back to Calgary. They tried really hard but just couldn't pull it together in the first two periods of the game. Good luck next year boys.

Geez, Meg! Love your play-by-play. Sorry, Jennifer. But, hey, at least a Canadian team got to the finals for the first time in like ten years, right? Wow. I'll tell you all about it... later.

No worries; I'm not bitter or sad that we lost. Calgary isn't even my hometown, so I was cheering for them just to have someone to cheer for :P

Great work 'Bolts', see you next year! (If there is NHL hockey next year... oh my...)
