Hey everyone! Please do me a favor and keep your fingers crossed for the next month or so. I just sent in my NASA SHARP application today (so it had to be post marked by tomorrow, what's a little procrastination? ). Anyway this is my second time around ( I applied last year too) so I'm really hoping to get in, but last year they had like 600 applicants for 200 spots or something like that . Thanks!

Thanks! I'm also applying for a trip to study Spanish in Spain or Mexico this summer as a back up. I've been selected as a finalist and have an interview next week.

OK, quick update. I haven't heard anything on NASA SHARP yet, but they have the list of confirmed application receipts up on their website and there are about 2,500 people applying for 200 spots. I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much because I did last year and was really disappointed.
As far as the Spanish trip goes, I've heard the list of people going was released last week, but the coordinator at our school (who is also my neighbor) was just diagnosed with cancer a few weeks ago so things have been kinda hectic. I plan to ask my teacher if she knows anything tomorrow.
I'll post as soon as I hear anything from either program.
By the way, is there anyone else on here that applied to NASA SHARP this year?

lindsey can prolly explain it better, but its a summer apprenticeship. you can go to a certain nasa site or to a college and work. you get paid a little and get to work right with nasa people. how much cooler could it get?
Actually http://www.nasasharp.com will get you to the same place but yeah it's pretty much what Meg said. You spend the summer assisting with NASA research and attending seminars and visiting NASA facilities and stuff. There are two components to it, commuter and residential. The commuter component is for people who live within a 50 mile radius of a NASA facility. Those people live at home and commute with a NASA employee who lives in the same vicinity. The comuter is for people, like me, who live nowhere near one but still want to be involved. You're housed at one of like 8 different universities across the country. They pay for your round trip travel from where you live to where you're going to be staying/working, cover your room and board, and pay you for a 40 hr. work week. It's a pretty sweet deal.

I got a letter today from the IU Honors Program. I'm currently on alternate status. My dad called the coordinator today to find out why I hadn't heard anything and my friends from my old school had (this was before I got the letter). The lady told him that I was a strong candidate, but was placed on the alternate list b/c I'd told them I was applying for another program (NASA SHARP) and would turn them down if I got into it. Hey, at least I was honest when they asked what my alternate plans for the summer were. Now, I'm kinda disappointed because with the 2500 applicants for NASA SHARP I have a strong feeling that I don't stand a chance. If all else fails, at least there's always space camp.

If anybody's interested (which I doubt anybody is), I did not get accepted to NASA SHARP. I got the letter Friday, and I would've posted then, but I was a little upset even though I'd seen it coming. I guess it's back to the drawing board for this summer.

Just when I think I'm down and out for the summer, life throw's me another curveball. LOL. My Spanish teacher got a phone call this morning from the director of the IU Honors program, and she said there was an opening for me in the group going to Mexico. Go figure. (this occurred less than 24 hours after I e-mailed the director to inform her that i did not get into NASA SHARP, does anyone else smell something fishy?) I won't complain though at least I got in.

it's a time to seize the moment.
it's a time to move on.
lol...I'm looking forward to it and am still really excited because the novelty of the idea hasn't worn off yet. All my friends are ready to kill me. I am sad that I won't be able to go to camp though.
