At our local science centre (and other science centres I have been to) they have a spinning umbrella thing. It is in a very vague mock-up of an ISS module. You stand on this plate that rotates and wobbles and watch the dots go round and round... Apparently some people get dizzy and/or nauseated. I could stand there for hours mesmerised. (I don't think I spelled that right!)

They had this ISS mock-up thing in Vancouver (in 1999) with the ISS demonstration stage they now have at the USSRC. I wonder if they split the two exhibits up, or if they have multiple copies across the continent?

Our museum here had a traveling iss exhibit a cou0le of times. It consisted of 2 large trailers with NASA and space stuff [painted on the outside and on the inside it atleast somewhat looked like the space station.

NASA SUPPORTS NEW IMAX 3-D FILM PROJECT WITH TOM HANKS AND
LOCKHEED MARTIN

The IMAX Corporation, in association with Academy
Award-winning actor Tom Hanks, and aerospace technology leader
Lockheed Martin Corporation, announced a new IMAX 3-D space
film, which will take moviegoers to the moon and allow them to
walk side-by-side with the brave astronauts of the Apollo
program.

IMAX will produce "Magnificent Desolation" along with Hanks'
and Gary Goetzman's production company Playtone. Lockheed
Martin will sponsor it.

"NASA is proud to collaborate with Playtone, as well as
continue our successful relationships with IMAX and Lockheed
Martin," said Glenn Mahone, Assistant Administrator for Public
Affairs at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "Tom Hanks'
enthusiasm for exploration is clearly evident in his previous
productions that chronicle NASA's remarkable history, and we
believe 'Magnificent Desolation' is a wonderful opportunity to
capture the interest and curiosity of the next generation of
explorers."

The film will take the audience to the surface of the moon, to
the Ocean of Storms, the Fra Mauro Highlands and the Taurus
Littrow Valley, as well as the Sea of Tranquility, as only
IMAX 3-D cameras can. "Magnificent Desolation" continues
IMAX's space film legacy and its unique production partnership
with Lockheed Martin and NASA.

MER Mars IMAX

Post by SpaceCanada »

They are also doing something with the MER Mars rovers on IMAX. A group of my friends (from all over the world) went to Cape Canaveral to witness the launch of Opportunity; called MER-B at the time. While they were there they attended a teacher's conference where they were told that several IMAX cameras would be shooting the Delta II Heavy launch for a future IMAX film. I wonder what it could be? I also heard something about them using digital images from the two rovers in this future film. If I find our more I will be sure to share it with everyone.

Mars in IMAX, cool. These days, I think it's worthwhile to shoot everything you can in IMAX, you never know when you'll have a need for it in a movie.

I have several IMAX films (Dream is Alive, Hail Columbia, and Destiny in Space) on DVD as well, so I guess that makes me a dork too!

Gene Kranz was in Mission Control for some of the first shuttle flights. I am not that sure which missions he did though. I am pretty certain the movie is accurate, but flaws do happen...

I am probably not the best person to ask about this, since I have enjoyed all but one IMAX film I have ever seen. (That one film being "T-REX".)

I bought "Destiny in Space" because it features Roberta Bondar, the first female Canadian in Space. I like it better than "The Dream is Alive", but that is just my personal opinion. You may want to read some other opinions first before you make the trek back to the IMAX theatre.

Does anyone know if the IMAX film "Mission to MIR" ever came to DVD? If so, the next time I make it into the city I'll stop in and ask the folks at the space/science centre to order a copy for me.

I have paid about 25$ Canadian for DVDs, which is about 19$ US. The IMAX DVDs are more expensive than normal DVDs because they are specialty items. I think the VHS versions are around 18$ Canadian, or about 13$ US. So, if I were you, I'd do some hunting around for a better price!

The DVD is very similar to the VHS. There are no special features except the Trailer and some IMAX information. The only reason I get DVDs for space movies is because I watch them so many times the tapes wear out!

While I do not live in South Edmonton, I will check out the Future Shop in North Edmonton next time I go to the city. Hopefully they will have it there. If not, I'm sure they can order it in. I still have to go to Wal-Mart to see if they have the Space Camp DVD.

Can you tell I get into the city often? I only live 20 minutes away, but I only go there about once a month! I'll be there tomorrow at the Odyssium planning some Space Day activities for kids in Cold Lake - yay!
