RIO

Post by tennisrox014 »

wow, as a RIO myself , i feel the RIO positon gets very neglected and just dismissed, i mean i admited i had no idea what a RIO was until AC but i mean you never see groups of campers beating each other up to see who gets to be a RIO?

Fair point! I too was a RIO, however i definitly think i would have been better than my pilot lol. But RIO is very important none the less because it lets the pilot fly and keeps both of you alive. GO RIO! lol

As a RIO i have to agree its an important but overlooked position. But as far as fighting for the pilot position my team never had that problem. We just decided who would do what based on who was the better flyer. Ussually didnt have any problems.

my team had such problems we had 10 people who all wanted to be pilots and 2 who wanted to be RIOs there were these 2 guys who practically go in a fist fight over who would be the pilot , it was quite funny for the rest of us to watch, they ended up going into sim. number 2 which has a switch so that the back seat can fly and the back seat also has the foot brakes so, they would like have one of them take-off flip the switch and the other one could land.

I am an odd-ball person who would rather be a RIO than a pilot. Maybe because I could never be a pilot with my crazy eyes. I applied to the military as a "Flight Navigations Officer", as we call them up here, but I was declined. So sad... At least if I go to Adult AC one day I know I won't have too much competition for the RIO position ;) Go RIO's!!

my pilot was gun crazy and would always want to use guns instead of say guided missles.... and then this one plane asked the tower if they could unload all weapons before returning to base, the tower said no, so naturally they did, they unloaded sidewinders... it was not good

Ive been through mach III 3 times now, and i can safely say the RIOs are the most important part of the flight crew. My first year i was a RIO for a veteran pilot so i pretty much learned how to fly and operate the sim, but was in many ways worthless. the next year i was a pilot but sadly my RIO was fairly bad, in fact he went out of his way to mess up. This past summer i had the best RIO ever, we were on Ready 5 for T-ops and missed top gun by 2 pts, and i can tell you, that never would have happened if i didnt have my RIO.

Yes, rios are important , i was my flight leader and my rio wasnt good my last time at AC, it made the whole flight much harder not having a good rio!!!! She had no idea how to operate the radars or fire weapons , it was so hard being a pilot and doing the rio's job. and during top gun all she did was call out our alltitude. We still won but she wasnt a good rio at all. A rio really does make or break the team!
