RIP: Apollo 20

Post by Benji »

Though Tragedy Week is still a couple of weeks away, today is a sad day in space history as well. 34 years ago today, Apollo 20 was officially canned and MSC was directed to take immediate action to:
  • ~Stop work on LM-14 and determine its disposition.
~Delete requirements for the Apollo 20 spacesuits and portable and secondary life support systems.
~Determine disposition of CSM 115A pending a final decision as to its possible use in a second workshop mission.
~Reevaluate orbital science experiments and assignments and prepare proposed revisions.
Ad astra per aspera.

Looking at the stars always makes me dream, as simply
as I dream over the black dots representing towns and
villages on a map. Why, I ask myself, shouldn't the
shining dots of the sky be as accessible as the black
dots on the map of France?

And unfortunately Apollo's 18 and 19 would follow. I do have a great picture on the wall in my room though its of copernicus crater it was the planned landing sight for apollo 20 at the time of its cancelation. It was taken by Lunar Orbiter 2.
