Yesterday (10/21), Dr. Ronald E. McNair would have been 53 and today Don Peterson turned 70.

Jack Swigert, Jr., who survived Apollo 13, sccumbed to cancer 21 years ago today. He was 51.

Charles Basset II and Steven Smith's b-day is the 30th. Basset would be 72 and Smith will be 45.

Al Shepard, Stu Roosa, and Edgar Mitchell returned to Earth 33 years ago today after a 9 day trip that was out of this world (get it? they went to the Moon!). Shepard and Roosa spent almost 10 hours walking on the Fra Mauro highlands of the Lunar surface during their 33 hour stay, near the planned Apollo XIII landing site. The mission met all of it's primary objectives and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on Febuary 9 at 4:05 pm, EST.

Well today in 1969 the Russians made the first launch attempt on an N-1 booster. The N-1 was their equivelant to the Saturn V. However shortly after launch ocilations knocked several com[ponents loose inside causing first a fire in the rear engine compartment and then an explosioon of the vehicle. Russia pointed to a grave mistake for the cause. They aparebntly broke the champagne bottle against the crawler and not the rocket when christening it. LOL

Today, Ken Mattingly turns 68. Ken looks rather like Rob Corddry from The Daily Show With Jon Stewart. You may remember Ken from not getting the measels, though he orbited the Moon as CMP of Apollo 16 and commanded STS-4 and STS-51C.

Ken was also the first person to land the shuttle on a cement runway on STS-4. Previous missions landed on the lakebed at Edwards and in White Sands.

110 years ago, Montreal beat the Ottawa generals 3-1 in the first Stanley Cup game ever.

Today in 1904, The London Daily Illustrated Mirror publishes the first color photograph.

Nine years ago, Russian cosmonaut Valeri Polyakov returned to Earth after setting a record for 438 days in space.

And seven year ago, Hale-Bopp comet came the closest to Earth it will be until 4397.

Yeah, poor Mir. On to more important issues...

Both pie and pi are awesome. Sunday before last was Pi day, March 14, and I celebrated with pie at 1:59... woohoo!
