The Best Team Ever!

Post by monkeynautt »

So now I'm back and I'm extremly tired. I had quite an adventure.

Friday- I left for Calgary at 8am. We got to Calgary at around 11am, had a drink then I checked in for my flight. I got through customs then waited to board the plane. Once on the plane I waited. And waited. There were mechanical problems so after 2 hours on the plane they cancelled the flight. By this time all other US departures had left so it was impossible to get to Huntsville on Friday. I told ticket people that I had to be in Huntsville by 10am Saturday morning. I ended up flying to Toronto Friday night. I got to Toronto at midnight and got a hotel room (Northwest paid for it) By the time I got to the hotel it was 12:45am. I had to be back at the airport for 4am. So I didn't sleep. I watched tv. I left at 4am and my flight to Detroit was at 6:30am. I had to go through customs again and then got on my flight. From Detroit I went straight to Huntsville. I slept for that entire flight. I was tired.

I'm going to split the posts up so it doesn't get to long to read.

Saturday- I got to Huntsville at 9:45am. We were in the airport for about 30 minutes then they took us to camp. I checked in then we had to wait because the rooms weren't ready yet. I was in room 414. I got my bed over the lockers then came down for orientation. It was the last ASA orientaion that Joel did. I will miss him. He was funny. After orientation we went with our teams for lunch. I was on Goddard and Jason was my night counsellor. From the beginning he was insane. Our team was laughing from Saturday morning until Friday night. During ice breakers Jason was talking about himself. He stopped midsentence and yelled squirrel and chased after it. The poor thing jumped 3 feet into a tree. From then on we all knew Jason was insane. Jason and Michelle were doing a breifing together Saturday night and they were just too funny. Breifings with them are hilarious. Saturday afternoon was some briefings (I don't remember much because I was really tired. I had not slept in 2 days at this point.) My week was also the first week they intoduced team patches. One of the counselors designed 6 mission patches and as a team you got to choose one and everybodies last name was put on it. I'll get my friend to scan it. It looks really cool! I can't remember everything so some activities might be mixed up. I know that we had our rocketry breifing with Melissa and we also did the 1/6th G chair after the rocketry breifing. That was fun. The boys were messing around so Jason threw a bag of cookies at them. He hit one and the cookies flew to beside the grey door in Astrotrek. Two of the guys got up and raced for them. There was a puddle of water and Greg slipped and fell into it. He was soaked. Jason was laughing so hard as was the rest of the team. We called Greg Splat for the rest of the week. The payload specialist built rockets with Shreck last thing Saturday night. He tried to insert the engine mount backwards and blame it on us. He's really funny. I was asleep before lights out Saturday night because I was so tired.

Sunday- We got up early and had breakfast. We still had Jason because Becky was on vacation. We didn't have her until Tuesday morning. We had hydroponics first (I think). We also had onther things briefings and stuff. We had hardly any free time because we had so much to do. Sunday we also had track splits. There were a lot of track splits this year. (We had one Saturday night. Payloads built rockets while MSs did Apollo 15 and I don't know where the pilots went.) The payloads (we started of with 3) got to play with Lego mindrovers or watever it is called. We built a tram that would go across a string that was strung across the room. It took forever but we finally got it to work. It was pouring rain while we were inside doing this. We were in the hydroponics lab. We had briefings as well but I don't remember all of them. It sure does take a long time to find a working overhead though. Before supper we had another track split. This time the PS did Apollo 15. We first watched the video then we got to do the activity. We did it outside. I went with a counselor who was being trained. We were the hunters first. The others hid behind Skylab and we found them without having to ask any questions. Then we hid. We hid in the entrance line to G-force (the museum was closing so the ride wasn't going). You could see us from 3 places if you walked by. We watched the other payloads walk right past us but they never saw us. It took them forever to find us. We found them in 5 minutes whil it took them close to 20 minutes to find us. We then had supper and then more briefings. We also had Alpha mission training at night. It was the last thing we did. I signed the poster after because Arlisa was in the Shuttle. After, while we were waiting for the MSs to come out, Jason and Brent tied a counselor to one of the things that SA uses. They then did her jacket up so she couldn't get out. It was incredably funny.

Moday- We still just had Jason because Becky wasn't back yet. We had the second part of hydroponics as well as more lectures. There were more track splits as the Mission specialists went SCUBA diving. The other 2 payloads had left monday morning so when we did teh track split I was by myself. I had to launch a rocket and make sure it's payload of 5 crystals stayed intact. One broke but it did launch pretty high. This was the part that would count towards the Payload specialist award. Since there was only one of me the breifing was done pretty quickly so I went to the SCUBA tank. I was sitting by Jason when he took the bottle of "whale spit" and started squirting it down at Shreck who was waiting by Atlantis. His reaction was so funny. He looked up at us and was like "I should have known it was you!" We had a good laugh at that. I also had optics which was another track split. It was just me and Jason for it. I don't remember everything because the days all blend together. There were also breifings and stuff. We also got our flightsuits. I borrowed one because I didn't want to use my light blue one. We also had our Bravo and Charlie mission trainings. Thats all I can remember from Monday. Jason also told us we had to be nice to Becky because she was jet lagged. Nick was not allowed to be himself. A crazy team with crazy counselors equals a lot of fun.

Tuesday- Mission Day. We had all of our one hour missions. We also had Area 51 first thing in the morning. We only got 2 events done. We had a breifing after and then our first mission. After our mission we had lunch. At lunch we were all still wearing our flight suits and a news crew came by and wanted to interview one person. Mike went with them while the rest of us ate lunch. When we were done we went down to the blue fence to watch Mike. They news people then put all of us on TV. We all got to say where we were from and then we yelled out our team name. After we became tv stars we were late to go launch rockets. It was a disaster. They only had B engines and our rockets were too big for them. Every rocket became a lawn dart. My first stage seperated as the rocket was pointing down so the nose cone went 3 inches into the ground. We had fun watching them. I got to SCUBA today. Since I was the only payload Jason was able to come down in the water with me. I got to do everything down there. We were down there for 35 minutes which is double what you are usually down there for. Jason kept doing funny things and making me laugh. I had a great time. After SCUBA was supper and some more breifings and Bravo mission. Our Charlie mission was last and things were running 30 minutes late. We didn't get done until 10:30pm. We were the last ones into the Hab again. We also had our team picture in the morning.

Wednesday- Today was our EDM. We had ours at night. The morning was more breifings and we got to sleep in to 8am although the hab was very loud. I don't remember everything today. We had our EDM training in the afternoon and started the EDM soon after that. I was in shuttle for the first half and station for the second. Becky was PAO/Mission Scientist for the first half and then she went to bed. EDM was fun and long. We had many problems but got though most of them. The medical anomlies were great. On shuttle I got to go all physco and yell at people. I was screaming and yelling so much they could hear me in MOCR through the headset that was on someones head. Jason actually phoned Arlisa to find out what was going on and she had to go outside because I was screaming so much. My pilot was to scared to come near me. In station when we were in the node I had a heart attack and was sick all over everyone. One point all you would see if you watched the shuttle screen was my legs coming out from behind the cupboard. We had 4 fires on station and many leaks but we all survived but I don't know how. The counselors really tried hard. At one point on shuttle 4 out of 5 of us were out cold. We also taped Mike to the floor twice. It was funny. The shuttle crew landed with the payload bay doorsd opened so they died. We didn't. Once the mission was done we got back to the hab. Last again.

Thursday- Water activities. The helo dunker is fun when you go a buch of time in a row. Radio telescope. Solar physics along with solar telescope. And other briefings. We had the second part of Area 51. Clouds started to form part way though but we continued on. We were in the middle of the second activity when we had to stop and throw everything into the shed and run back to the hab. Soon after we got there the sky turned black. We were stuck in there until it was safe enough to go the cafeteria. We had to run under the trees because pathfinder is taller. We were stuck in the cafeteria for an hour and Ben's team broke out and sung the US anthem. It was really random. We went back to hab and had to wait for our next breifing. Jason brought out his guitar and played for us. We then had Russian Space history. That is a really funny lecture when Alexis gives it. He was to afraid to turn the lights out. Right after he gave us the solae system breifing. After that we went back to the hab. A couple of us stayed at the bottom and talked to Jason. Then we went to bed. It was our last night with Jason.

Well I had one guy stepping on me taping me to the floor. I didn't particularly enjoy that too much, lol. Then this girl tied my shoes together and this other guy taped my head down.

Friday- We basically did nothing but fill out evals and hung around. We went to the gift shop and had lots of team time. It was sad. These were the last ours as a team. We also did Space Bowl in the morning. Then grad. I won the Payload Specialist award and my team found it quite funny because I was the only payload on my team. It was the only award our team one. Do to a mix up no one on our team won the Right Stuff. Only 3 from my team stayed the extra night and Becky was the EALD counselor. We bugged her all night and it was fun. Me and the other girl from my team got a room to ourselves.

Saturday- Jay forgot to mark our room down so we never got up. We got out of our room at 8:45am to go look for a counselor. We found it very funny. We had breakfast and then went to the museum. That was pretty much all we did. Before we went to lunch we attacked Becky in the museum. After lunch we attacked Jason in the cafeteria. After lunch it was time to leave for the airport. It was sad. I miss Space Camp. I got back to Calgary at 11pm and took the bus home on Sunday. I am now very tired.

Monkeynautt, i think it was hillarious (glorious) that you won the PS award being the only one on the team. I also figured that since you left space camp you have missed the reading of the Gorge Carlin, so i figured that you wanted more.

When hundreds of people are killed in an airplane crash I always wonder if maybe there wasn't one guy, a littlt behind schedule that day, who ran down the last few hundred yards of the airport concourse to make the plane on time. And when he finally sat in his seat, out of breath, he was really glad he made it. And an hour later the plane goes down. What goes through his mind? Do you think maybe in those last few moments, as he plunges to the Earth he wishes he'd had a heart attach while running to the airport?

Is there supposed to be one from each team? Sorry, I don't remember this kind of stuff real well. On our last day we pretty much just hung out with the other ASA teams and heard like 4 different national anthems due to the fact that it was July 4 and several of the Americans were singing The Star Spangled Banner, and since there were people there from 3 other countries they wanted to sing their national anthems.

Laura and Ethan (and any other Week 42 Goddard-ers...) -
Jason and I miss you guys bunches! I told my team this week about running into the door during the EDM, and they all thought it was hysterical too. :)

Keep in touch, and keep us updated with what's going on with y'all.
