Thanks John let me know if you find anything.l I love books on the space program old or new. Actually i really like some of the older ones because they showed so much promise for the future of the space program. I'm lucky i have 2 great resources available to me at the local space museum. The museum has an educator resource center full of information thats free to get copies of including the preflight press conference for every flight through the end of last year plus many other videos, books and fact sheets. Plus the museum has a library full of all kinds of books on space and aviation.

A Better PAO position

Post by Benji »

Back on the topic of the PAO, I have an idea that wouldn't make the job so bad. It's kinda stupid, kinda funny, but I think it would work well. My idea: Have the PAO "call" the mission as if he/she were a TV announcer during a hockey game. Here's an example of how the mission might start for the PAO:

"Good afternoon! I'm Vincent Vazzo here in Enterprise Mission Control on the Training Center Floor of the US Space and Rocket Center in Rocket City, USA: Huntsville, Alabama. We're currently at T-9 min and holding as the team prepares to launch the Space Shuttle Enterprise into orbit. The crew here in MOCR will oversee the important scientific experiments that will take place both on board the Shuttle and the space station. The highlight of this mission, of course, will be an EVA to fix a malfunctioning salad bow- I mean satelite. Sara Hardin, a veteran mission specialist will perform this space walk. Weather looks good and the launch will take place shortly, but first, let's check in with our flight controlers and shuttle crew. The Flight Directer here in MOCR is Benjamin Schwartz, a veteran Flight who's primary objective is to get his crew to listen to him. At the CapCom/OTC station..."

OK, maybe I've thought about this too much, but the SHIPI could provide some commentary. For example:

PAO: The APU prestart involves over 15 switches that must be switched in the proper order or they may not start properly. The APUs control all of the hydraulics onboard, including the engine gimbals, so it's very important that they perform this properly.
SHIPI: That's true, Vincent, but this pilot has flown three times before and knows what he's doing. He's backed by a very skilled commander, too. If I had to go up, this is the crew I'd want to take me to orbit.
PAO: Good point, Jason. Moving on to the middeck...

Moderator: I'm sure Vincent Vasso would appreciate his last name not getting so mangled...but I'll let you look up the correct spelling.

Benji: Sorry, Vincent Vazzo, I fixed it now. I wasn't that far off.

Benji i have to say thats the most intresting take on the PAO position i've ever heard. But if i were in MOCR id still prefer the flight director position.

Well, of course, but somebody has to get stuck at the PAO station, and this would spice things up a bit. I'd just have to find someone willing to do it. I don't know many space campers who aspire to be sports casters.

Well it would have to be an ASa person since at ASa you dont have a word for word script to follow like you do at camp and academy.

Our PAO went insane last week. At one point she thought she was the crocodile hunter (she was from Australia). Of course after the tornado hit MOCR (did I mention Brent was in MOCR for our EDM), she really lost it.

I didn't steal it, I borrowed it. It's a good idea. The story reminded me about it.

You're making a video?
