Paper Spacecraft Models!

Post by Space Camp Brainiac »

I am a very obsessed paper model maker! I have models of ONLY spacecrafts like the Hubble Space Telescope, Columbia, Endeavor, Atlantis, etc. All of it was free! You should try this really cool hobby, Space Campers! To get you started, I've included a few good sites to start you off, but try www.google.ca to search for more.

I was in the middle of one (Columbia) but my little brother wrecked it. What a pain.

Where did you get the styrofoam spacecraft model? Was it free?

Actually, I made it from scratch. I bought a big piece of styrofoam and then printed out a bottom, top, and side view to use as a template. I put the bottom view on the styrefoam and traced it and cut it out using a box cutter, and then I cut out a rectangular piece that was pointed on one end and glued it on top of the other piece. Then, I spent many many many hours sanding it it to it's final shape. I cut a tail out of styrofoam and sanded it down till it was thinner than the body but thick enough to support itself. I used thimbles for the three main engines.

Thimbles! I'd never have thought of it myself.

What was the context in which you were to make a shuttle out of styrofoam for history?

I am trying to find a free model of the shuttles Challenger, Enterprise and Discovery. If any of you guys have a link to that, please post it cuz I am collecting all six shuttles (including test shuttles like Atlantis or Enterprise!)

Ok, first of all Atlantis isn't a test shuttle (at least it wasn't last I checked). Second of all, our history project was to recreate something that we deemed historically significant.

Hmm I don't think it was a test shuttle either...but whatever. Oh okay I can see now how it would be a good history project. I guess I wasn't making the connection. Did you make just an orbiter or an entire shuttle?

I made an entire shuttle that was almost to scale, but the orbiter was the best part and it was the only part made out of styrofoam.

The only thing that was off scale wasthe diameter of the ET. I used a two liter bottle and based the rest of my dimensions on the distance from the bottom to the base of the neck.

I was going to ask about what other materials you used to make it.....but um you sorta answered it. Well, what did you make the SRBs out of?

I used paper towell tubes and then shaped the nosecones out of styrofoam. Be careful when you paint the styrofoam though because certain types of paints will melt the styrofoam. Same with glues.

I made the whole shuttle. And the last time I checked, Atlantis was a experiment. Is there any proof against that? I'd like to know. :?
